His name is Harrison. The wife is doing well. She had a c-section, so she's healing up. Harrison is doing well, but is in the NICU. Due to the wife having Vasa Previa and Harrison being IUGR, they took him out 5 weeks early. He is small, but starting to put on some weight now. He struggles to stay warm, so they have him in the toaster. At 35 weeks gestation, babies don't quite have the energy for feedings, so he's on a feeding tube. But he gained 65g over the last 24 hours, so his weight is increasing. Still down from birth weight, but yesterday was the first increase since he was born on the 26th.

Right now, we are kind of cheating on sleep. We were in the hospital for 4 days, but now we are ho me. Since Harrison is getting the absolute best care in the NICU, we are going home to sleep at night. I figure, we can't care for Harrison if we aren't taking care of ourselves too. Mama slept pretty good last night. Me? Not so much. Just couldn't shut it off. We know he is going to be fine, but it is heartbreaking to leave your 5 day old behind. It hit me a lot harder than I thought it would.
I couldnt imagine having to leave him... Good that he is gaining weight. Im sure its stressful with him being a bit early and all but if it helps a good friend of mine had a baby at 21.5 weeks. Tiny tiny. She is in first grade now, smart as a whip, and healthy. sending a prayer yalls way!

Congrats on the addition! He's a keeper!
Thank you! I knew I would love him, but I didn't realize how much. It is amazing how quickly it happened. I saw him, and that was it.

Congratulations to Mom and you.
Thank you!

That is wonderful news. I've decided that, as long as the doctors aren't worried, I am not going to worry. I am confident that he will be strong and healthy when he gets out of here.

Its the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston SC. I took it Monday when I was out fishing. A lot less traffic than Dallas, but the influx of people since 2020 is mind blowing. I hope we don’t loose the historical charm that makes it such a great place.
I was born just north of there in Georgetown. The new bridge is beautiful, but I miss the original very old narrow Cooper River (Grace Memorial built in 1928) bridge that double spanned over the rivers. It was narrow, steep, and charming... but maybe it's just me miss remembering good times. My father was in the USAF stationed in Homestead AFB south of Miami. We'd drive the 770 miles twice a year crossing the bridges at Brunswick, then Savannah, and the final big finale in Charleston. It was all 2 lanes back then. Mount Pleasant was a very quaint village that didn't even reach Hwy 17.

Now all three cities sport similar style bridges within feet of being the same height.

Man, has it been eventful. We were making really good progress last week, then Harrison decided it was time to throw a wrench in our plans.

Jan 15: Last night, Harrison had an episode of SVT (Superventricular tachycardia). His heart rate jumped to 300 bpm and they were unable to get it to come down through normal techniques. They ended up having to get an IV in and administer medication. His heart rate was elevated for approximately 30 minutes. The good news is that we know the medication works. Harrison was transferred from a level 2 NICU to a level 4 NICU at ~0100. Stacey rode in the ambulance with him, while I followed behind.

Jan 15: As of now, none of the staff appears to be concerned. SVT is not...uncommon. There is a strong chance that he had it once and will never have it again. If he does experience it again, there is medication to control it (in the moment and long term). He did have a circumcision yesterday afternoon and, while that wouldn't cause this, stress can be a trigger/contributing factor. I can't think of much more stressful for a baby than getting your foreskin cut. ?

Current: Harrison had an EKG and an Echo done. His heart looks strong, with no deformities. Since the SVT he lost quite a bit of weight (65g) and has been slowly putting it back on. Since he lost so much of his weight, he's had trouble maintaining temperature on his own. Yesterday and today, he has kept his temps up, but he is still in the Isolette. The real test will be if he can maintain his temp when we move him to a crib. He has started eating his whole feedings (45mL) from breast or bottle over the last 24 hours. Part of me thinks its because he is tired of the feeding tube. He ripped it out 3 times yesterday.

In order for us to go home, Harrison needs to maintain his temperature on his own and eat 80% of his feedings through a nipple (breast or bottle). We are on his schedule.

Thank you! It was heart wrenching to get that call. I knew it couldn't be good if they were calling.

He clearly did not get that from me. hahahaha! I've been bald since I was 18 (not shaved head, but actual hair loss). My grandpa has been bald for as long as I have been alive. My wife's father (who is where children get their hair) is gray, but a full head of hair at 60 something.

playing with my camera while doing some exploring ranch roads and county roads. The clouds and wintery brown seemed like a pic worthy moment. same spot later in the year will be green as can be. Lonely fireplace / chimney still standing. the rest of the home is long gone. not even a rut or path around it any more. Abbs in whats left of Dark Corner Texas. Just the graveyard is about all thats left. Historical marker mentions that men from Mexican American war, Civil War, WW1, and WW2 are resting there.

Have you tried long leaf pine over there for over the winter greenery?

Looking at the map the area/soil looks like a pine country. But closest example I could find on the map was some 100 miles to east.

Could it be that the pines in the area have been cut down in the past and then grazed to death with cows?

If pine would grow there I see great opportunities for wood farming.

Edit: Well the U.S. Geological Survey had the answer to that question. The soil there is alkaline, so no pines for you :) You could plant them, but most likely with poor results. Would need a lot of sulfur to get it to grow naturally.

I have not but I might thanks for the idea. Some pines in the area but sparse. Most of the area is oaks and brush. Plus lots of cattle grazing
