I am looking for some feedback from the group. I know this has been discussed to no end, But I am looking for specific feedback from owners of these products.

I am looking at either the BAKFLIP MX4 or F1 folding hard cover or the BAKFLIP X4s roll up cover. I am hoping to hear from you guys that have these, or have had these, and if you like them or not, would buy them again or if you have any "stay away from" comments.

I need a pretty good deal of security, I will be permanently be keeping some expensive gear in the bed. So here are my main questions....
-Which one has the better security? (Worried about break in)
-Is the MX4 (aluminum) or F1 (fiberglass) a better choice for durability, (scratching, setting things on it)
-What do you like or hate about each?
-Are they both pretty waterproof? One over the other?

Thanks for any honest feedback.

I have had the MX4 on my past three F-150s. I liked the overall performance. Got stuck in a hail storm once. Truck had no damage. The cover looked rough after. Didn’t affect performance, so I kept it on there. I was never a fan of leaning that cover up against the back of the cab or glass (!) when open. So I decided to look for a better option for the Ranger.

I now have the new X4S. It is pricey, but I like it.
I like the fact that it only comes half way up the glass when rolled up. Doesn’t really block much when you consider how much the headrest blocks…
Rolling it, either direction, is easier than folding the trifold, which gets heavier and more cumbersome as you open it.
I also like the lower profile.
The vinyl cover is a welcome change. I like the way it looks like a regular tonneau cover. No worry of hail damage.
Security is pretty good. It locks for the entire length of the bed rail. I had installed slide-locks on my MX, to prevent it from being opened with a coat hanger from the tailgate end. I’m not concerned with that on the X4S because of the lip that pushes up against the width of the tailgate.

Seems to manage water just OK. There are lots of gaps around the bed rails where they meet the bulkhead. And of course around the tailgate. If you plan to keep stuff in the bed, I would just keep things in totes to be safe.

I think this cover is also a bit lighter, should you need to remove it.

If you get one - be sure to read all the instructions before beginning the install. The Ranger required extra plates at each of the 4 corners of the bed. This is covered in supplemental instructions. Many people have put it on, just to take it off and install the plates and start over.

I would recommend the X4S over folding versions. I would also buy it again.

Hi There..

I recognize you specifically asked about the Bakflip MX4 and I'm only writing because I was in the same boat as you, comparing the MX4 to others, for me, the Ultraflex. I ended up going with the Undercover Ultraflex.

Undercover Ultra Flex

I liked the carpeting on the underside, bed light (never use it) and the finish. It has not disappointed..very secure and rugged. 90-95% Water tight. Kind of tricky to install but I think they all are as the Ranger has such small thin lips to clamp to.

Just a couple of cents added for your research...

Cheers.
James.

I have used the Fibermax exclusively on about 5 trucks different brands of trucks and love them. Waiting for funds to grow on the tree out back to get one for the ranger. The RAM longbed doesn't fit very good on the ranger LOL.

I've got the Bakflip F1 and I like it. The FRP material is very durable and won't ding. Appears to be pretty scratch resistant. I like the versatility but it is not 100% water tight. I get a few drips from various places in heavy rain.

I bought mine in September and it has been doing good but I think it's a bit overpriced regarding over quality of the product. For example the rods have fallen off while driving which can be put back on. The drain tube keeps coming off, I had to secure it with a zip tie which helped. But when you pay $ 1000 for a product, you shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that. The passenger side leaks a little bit. I think its the seal. If you have a plastic bedliner, you'll have to trim it. By doing that, there's a gap on the bed behind the driver's side which will leak through. The bedliner covered it. I bought some seal on Amazon to stuff in that gap. Security wise, I haven't had any issues. I do hear that some one can stick a hangar to unlock the cover but you can do that to a truck window too. Otherwise it's not easy to get open. The fiberglass one would be a good choice to protect from hail. But they say the mx4 is a more up-to-date product.

Installation wise, i attempted to install it but was confused on the bed liner trimming and the instructions so I had it done professionally. With the confusing instructions, it was worth paying to have it installed. Cost me about $125. There may be better choices out there but the mx4 is a decent choice which I'm satisfied even with the minor gripes.

I forgot to add that though I love the Bakflip Fibermax the pole holders like to break off, just a little plastic clip in the bed that if gets bang may break, I think they will replace it but I just always "let it hang".

Ive had the MX4 for a little over a year, my feedback pretty much matches everyone else on here. Just like anything else, you get what you pay for. You can get a good tonneau cover for $300ish or a really good one for $1,000ish

Is it expensive? Yes
Is it good quality? Also Yes
Is it the best one I can buy for $1,000 price point? Honestly I think so. It only has minimal water leakage and is very easy to use. Simple to open & close
Would I recommend Backflip MX4? Definitely yes.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
I had a bad experience with soft covers that involved a knife, so I don't get those. I have the BakFlip MX4 which I installed myself, wasn't to hard, just read the supplemental instructions first. I have a tailgate seal so I took it through the touch-less car wash to check for leaks, none on the sides, a little at the tailgate, and a little at the front left where I forgot to plug a hole (since taken care of), all in all not bad. I will be keeping some gear in there while camping so wanted a hard cover with security. There is a mod you can do to the pull cables to prevent a coat hanger from opening it so I will do that in time, in the mean time I stuck a wireless remote motion alarm under the cover, when armed it will make a serious racket when disturbed, have only forgotten it once :)

Have you also looked at the Truxedo Sentry CT? Same pricing (give or take a few $$). I have one of these. Look at my profile for pics. If you want any specific things photographed, just let me know.
It has a heavy-duty fabric cover on solid black anodized aluminum slats, (Sentry is vinyl, Sentry CT is fabric) and looks really well-finished. Very low profile when rolled down, maybe 1/2" rise, with industrial velcro to keep the edges streamlined. Feels really sturdy, and secure. I haven't walked on it, but it seems maybe sturdy enough for that (rated for 400 lb, but I don't know if that's evenly distributed or point load). There is a second set of latches at the midpoint that discourage casually lifting the middle slats (the secondary latches automatically release when rolling it up). No worries about someone breaking into it with the locking tailgate, although no tonneau cover will withstand someone with tools. Easy to roll up and down, and the latches work perfectly. Easy to release with a small wire rope underneath (releases both sides with one hand) and engages with a firm satisfying click just by pressing down lightly on the last slat. The securing straps are easy to use for driving with it rolled up. The entire cover can be removed in literally seconds if you need a completely open bed (rails stay in place, and the entire rolling assembly lifts off).
I have a little bit of water intrusion on the front right corner, but I think a strategic drop of silicone RTV will cure that. I had a little trouble with the initial installation, because I couldn't figure out how it was supposed to seal (and it didn't) but when I called to get some help, they said the sealing system had been re-designed and they sent me the new parts at no charge. After that it was much better. I was dithering between the Backflip Revolver X4 and the Sentry CT, and I found a few helpful reviews (linked below). I hate anything vinyl, especially when exposed to sunshine, so the fabric finish really decided it for me, but you may have a different perspective.

Here's a review of the F-150 version by someone who owned both:

I have had 2 G2 covers. For my Ranger I just went with a diamondback cover for security, which would be my recommended solution if security is your prime concern.

I have the BakFlip G2. I like it but, I miss the coverage that my fiberglass cover had on my 03 ranger edge.

I have noticed leaks into the bed with the flip cover. Not down the middle but, most likely form the rails that it attaches to. Not a huge deal as the stuff I have in the bed of the truck is in its own sealed tool box or, in the swing cases.
