Where I live they have to charge you book hours. There is no negotiation after the estimate.
In my jurisdiction, repair time estimates are based on flat rate, if the total estimated cost is within 10% of the original, the repairer is not required to notify you.
However, should it exceed that amount, Hawaii State law requires that they do notify you, it's purely up to you to stop or proceed with the repair.

So I am having the dealer install the hitch from ford. They call me today and say "So when installing these 50 percent of the time we break the clips on the fascia, well we did on yours. We can put it back together without replacing this and youll just see a small gap on the one side. Or for $166 we can order new ones and itll look like it did before".

Now I told them to go ahead and make it look brand new but I am curious if anyone else has had this experience. Is it worth me throwing a shit fit over? Doesn't seem like I should have to pay since you guys broke it doing the install.
I added my own hitch and didn't break anything. Make them pay.

Exactly what clips is your post about?

Or they're incompetent. Or both. ?

I think they displayed their incompetence very well. Stay away from those assholes.

Seriously???
Haven't seen it, but yeah, doing a good repair would be preferable to paying the dealership for a replacement part.
Personally I would insist on the dealer taking responsibility and replacing the part, but apparently that option has been forfeited.
Got Pictures?

they break half of them and didn't bother to mention that up front so you could find someone better?
For 30 Years I worked at almost every capacity at a Multi-Franchised Auto Dealership.....Solution: Go to the Office Manager & schedule an Appointment with the Dealer General Manager.....If he is a Customer Service oriented Guy the fix will be at No Charge & fixed Properly. If Not Find yourself a Store who will take care of you as you are a Valued Customer......

I'm on the other side of this equation, meaning, if/when my service team breaks something, I eat it. There simply isn't an excuse to put this back on you. They probably gave the job to the nfg, and are covering for him.

I bought my Ranger used, but still under factory warranty. I had them replace the rear view mirror switch (driver side was inoperable) and there was a gouge/scratch in the plastic/chrome dash panel that wasn't there when I brought it in. The dealer service guy admitted it was their fault; I told him to let me know when the replacement was in so I could get it swapped. He asked if I wanted to order the part for the replacement - I told him "your team did the damage, you fund the replacement. I didn't arbitrarily scratch it". He got his SM and I talked to the guy for 20 minutes.

The panel got replaced. On them. They screwed it up, they pay for it. End of discussion.

Tell them this is on them; they damaged a re-usable item to an inoperable condition, therefore it's on them to source & supply its factory like in kind replacement.

"they damaged a re-usable item to an inoperable condition "

this is an assumption, and you base your facts on???

the OP has never come back after the first post, nor has he offered pics, or a description of what clips were damaged.
the thread should be closed at this point simply because theres no credible information at this point beyond the original complaint and the responses show this is going nowhere

Are these the clips??? those sure as hell are not reuseable.

how about these??? what exactly are they? plastic as well? clearly not reuseable.

If those amount to $166 worth of clips I think my truck is worth more than I thought! LOL

Could totally be those clips, by the way. But I've handled similar clips (not going to outright say "the same clips") and have reused them A LOT.

I'm wondering if they tore up the part of the fascia that the clips interface into???? I wish the OP would get back in here and provide some color on this. I hope this thread doesn't get closed so he has that oppurtunity!

Excellent points. I was making my statement based on what happened to me and their damaging my dashboard warranting them replacing the component. To follow up on your example, the dealership should know what consumables will be required to complete a repair, and explain that in detail when they are discussing a repair for a customer. If they didn't do that knowing these items were not reusable, then that's on the service writer/manager for not clearly conveying that fact prior to starting the repair.
