Update from Dave:

Dr said there's really nothing that can be done because it's viral. He said I was lucky it didn't get into my lungs like it does with some. Said I still could be another week or two before I feel better. Good news is I got my taste and smell back today and even he was surprised as it usually takes up to two months. Good thing because I was sick of everything tasting like dirt. ?
Thanks Terry, for passing along the message. Sounds as though the recovery will be slow but also sounds as though he is improving.

Happy to hear Dave's condition is improving. Well wishes to you sir. The forum's concern for your absence speaks volumes.

Very interesting to me that you've got your smell and taste back. I had a (unconfirmed) case of COVID in Mar 2020 which was not altogether remarkable except my smell and taste went away. They didn't come back for at least 10 weeks, and I'll be honest, some things don't smell like they used to. Some things I still can't smell at all. :(

Covid sucks man. Hope you get well soon Dave and others who have it! I've been fortunate to not have gotten it. I knew someone who couldn't get out bed and had to crawl to the bathroom. They had no health issues. Couldn't imagine what it would be like to not be able to breathe like some people have been suffering. I've had pneumonia and that sucked but this seems on a different level.

When the flu, getting older, or like this covid comes around, we all (at least sometimes) like to think we are practically invincible. " I won't get it". "I can handle that". "I can still lift that, move like that". Then reality comes around like a kick to the balls, putting times like these into perspective. Reading all these posts, you have A LOT of guys pulling for you and your GF, Dave. I as well. Hang in there, and hopefully you reading these posts will help at least put a little bit of bright skies in both of your days.

The wife and I both (apparently) had (unconfirmed) cases of Covid in January 2020 after coming back from a winter trip to Singapore. Nobody was testing yet, but we had every last symptom that they list as typical of it, down to the loss of smell. (I went out to get the wife a bowl of Panera Bread's chicken soup, which she usually likes, but she complained that they had changed the ingredients because it did not smell the same!) We were lucky in that our symptoms were relatively mild--like a bad flu for a week each--and we both recovered, but that could have been the end for one or both of us. You can bet your life that we both got vaccinated at the first opportunity and are still wearing masks! If they offer us a booster this fall, we will be the first in line. (Yeah, the vaccination kicks your butt for a few days, but it is better than the alternative!)

In the (temporary) absence of the Dean of Dampers, I wonder if we should appoint a Vice-Dean? Otherwise, who will look after the new members? How will they know what they are missing?
There is only ONE poobah of damperdom and any talk of changing that will only result in price increases and counterfeit junk.

+1 to what Rick said - besides, only Dave has the combination to the secret vault where the free t-shirts are stored.

I'll share a little story from earlier this year.

I was out for dinner with a friend.
We finished and were driving around when she got a text from a mutual friend asking if we had heard from John in awhile.
It dawned on me that I hadn't.
It was Feb 13th. I looked back in Facebook and the last time John commented on one of my posts was Jan17th.
It indeed had been a while and totally out of character. He comments every day unless her was on vacation.
We missed the void obviously. A lot of people did.

We told the mutual friend we would drive there. We were 30 minutes away VS her almost 2hrs.
All of us were understandably worried.

When we got there, there was one light on in the house. Fresh snow from 4 days earlier was still on the ground untouched. Mail box full. No sign of his car in our out of the driveway.
Was looking worse by the minute. None of the neighbors recalled seeing him "in the last week or so"

We knocked on the door. No answer. Couldn't see inside.

Decided on calling the police for a welfare check and they arrived about 30 minutes later and with their own knocking and no answer kicked in the door and found John deceased on the floor near the kitchen.
I knew what was coming next.
the police radioed in the VSA, then the ambulance showed up, fire department showed up. and the whole neighborhood, including his neighbors who should have been concerned as well suddenly took notice.
I called the mutual friend back with the bad news.

Was a sad day. John was a lonely man and liked it that way. But he died alone and no one was there to help him. As his friend and coworker for 12 years, i took it particularly hard because I should have noticed. Maybe it wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome....but at least he wouldn't have been laying there alone and dead for almost a month.

So, hats off to those who took steps after noticing Dave's absence. I have much respect for those who care.
I appreciate your respect and concern for John!

Marc, my vote for Vice-Poobah in the Grand Poobah's abstentia would be for Al @Texasota. We have seen his aquiescence to the all powerful tailgate damper. He has admitted that his adversion to said tailgate damper was ill concieved, and has prostrated himself before the master. His humility, and humbleness toward our exhaulted leader proves he has no other designs to the throne. What say ye......

I feel Rick @Trigganometry understands the void left by our supreme leader is vast, and Al would be but a mear speck on the legend that is Dave @AzScorpion

I am a little late catching the news about Dave and Annie. I can sense what they are going through. I had a viral infection (fortunately not Covid) in June and now dealing with cellulitis (bacterial) and improving. Not nearly as serious as Covid but symptoms have a way of reminding you of conditions that can be much more serious. I hope everyone on this site will at least consider Covid Vac's. Got mine as quickly as available with only minor side effects. I feel that the evidence leans toward prevention and easier recoveries even with occaisional negative effects. No vaccines to present have been without some issues. There are numerous opinions, reviews and research on this subject. This is just my own personal opinion and do not wish to create any debate about whether to Vax or not :) . I have been wrong about other issues before and will stay open to correction if necessry.

Dave and Annie will really appreciate prayer ? to make a successful and speedy recovery. I have enjoyed Dave's very unique sense of humor (especially the Money Pit posts  ) as well as his expertise in the truck senario ?

Seriously folks, we better warn @AzScorpion before hand about this thread and only read it in its entirety when he can belly laugh again or we’ll be sending him to the ICU for blowing a gasket laughing his proverbial ass off. Even healthy, reading it again I’m catching my breath from howling so much ?

Now that Dave is not around, it's the perfect time for you all to admit you got played. We on the other side, know you'd love to take your dampers and hang them in the garage beside the Spin-brush, slap-chop and Pet Rock. There's no shame in admitting you made a mistake. ;)

just got informed that Covid has made it into the walls of where I am working.

One of our younger employees fell ill last week, His last day was Wednesday the 11th. he got tested yesterday and he is positive.
His family is anti vaxx and not surprised he has gotten it.

For me, I wasn't here when he was contagious, I only showed up on the 15th and he was already off, but some of the other employees were, and I have been working with them since Monday.
will find out later today what the contact tracer people say about the risk to everyone else including myself. I'm double vaxxed and keep my distance as well I am an active handwasher simply because I don't like the dirt on my hands from doing the job. Good thing to be when in a pandemic.

Covids not over, and it wont be for some time.
Will keep my fingers crossed for you ?
