Hi folks. I'm in love with my ('21 XLT 4X4) Ranger. There are some quirks and annoyances I'd like to see fixed before I buy another one, but I'm really enjoying this truck!
This problem only manifested itself recently on a drive in North Dakota. In winter. Ambient temp at the time was -20F. Was using cruise control and got comfortable for a bit. But then I noticed several instances of loud engine revving and aggressive and abrupt (what I assumed was) downshifting. Turned cruise control off and pressed the "+" on the gear selector to see just what the heck was going on.
We are all aware by now that the Ranger likes to be at ~1500-1800 RPM and/or 10th gear at highway speeds. My truck avoided 10th gear at all costs, held higher-than-normal RPMs (2100+) and downshifted 2-4 gears if I so much as thought of adding more throttle, and downshifted at every slight incline. I attributed this to the cold, but I had recently driven from N. Idaho and spent two days driving thru snow and nice (and a night in Billings, MT @ -25F). Additionally, it isn't behaving like this all the time. It's intermittent.
Anyone with similar experiences? What about you, Canadians?
[Only mods thus far for me: topper, tailgate dampener (hehehe), and upgraded to heavier 265-70-17 Falken Wildpeaks.]
