Hopefully the deer was OK and not seriously injured! But if an animal does not make it in a road accident...the 66 Roadkill Cafe would love to have the remains...their cuisine specialty is Fender Fillets...

TL;DR:
A probably 300 pound deer ran into my right rear wheel this morning. He was running at like 10 mph. Should I be worried about suspension/drivetrain damage? Bent wheel? The truck didn’t seem to drive different after it happened.

Full Story
This morning, I was on my way to work. I left a little early because I wanted to stop and get breakfast. I drive about 30 miles along mostly two lane county roads. I like to go a little slower in the dawn/twilight times and at night because of deer.
So I get my breakfast and am cruising along at 45ish and all of a sudden, this buck pops out of the woods. With where he was, I knew he was either going to hit the side or miss me completely as I went by, so I gassed it and moved a little left, but he still hit me. The rear end moved a little, but I couldn’t see any damage out the passenger side mirror, so I kept going as it was like 10 minutes from work.

I guess I got really lucky in terms of body damage, there is a small dent in front of the fender flare. He hit the tire/wheel, mostly.

I didn’t notice the truck drive any different afterwards, but now I’m starting to get paranoid that something might be hurt in the rear suspension or drivetrain.

Have any of you guys ever had something similar happen? I’m going to crawl under it in a little while to look. The internet seems to think I should have called the police to get a report for insurance purposes, but it’s just a dent and it seems they would have more important things to deal with. I don’t really want to get insurance involved if I don’t have to.

Here is my truck before this incident.

Your mistake here is you left a little early for breakfast!
Save the planet, eat a little less. ?
First & last time I hit a deer was in a Sundance, it was totalled, I was happy! Hated that car.

Ha, I actually have no idea. He was a large buck, and I just googled the average weight of a male deer and that’s what came up.
Works for me!

Brand new GMC I believe , honestly there wasn't that much damage, grill, Radiator and straighten out the core support, unfortunately for some reason it set off every single airbag, so it was a total. In the drivers defense, the deer wasn't using the crosswalk, he got hit just before the sign ?

I feel your pain. Had a 97 Ranger that Bambi & her boyfriend ran out in front of. Air bag popped & destroyed front of truck. Worse part was they both kept going. Found a 98 Ranger that was cherry. paid top dollar but it was like new. Ta Da, two weeks later on way to work deer ran into left side. Got door & bed side. Worst part is that deer dont pay their insurance premiums.

I had these deer whistles double sided taped to the lower grille opening. Whether these work or not who knows.
But anyways, earlier this year I had to drive through some high water and one of them got lost. Oh well right?
Well on my last oil change I found the little bugger in the skid plate below the oil pan! Low and behold I discovered they fit snugly in the open air pockets next to the fog lights.
Now I can breathe a sigh of relief lol.

I have them on my Focus and idk if they actually work or not, but they can’t hurt, right? Do you remember which ones you bought, I was thinking of stopping at O’Reilly’s or somewhere on my way home and pick some up.

I read in the past that those deer whistles only produce the required pitch/sound at a specific speed. I found a 100 watt siren and air horn worked best. I always told my guys if you have to run hot thru known deer country, use the siren plus the lights. If you use just the emergency lights, the flashing caused the deer to freeze and it was usually while walking in front of your car.

No idea. I just transferd them from my last truck I drove for 17 years! Never hit a deer though.
