One of the things I liked most about our 5G Rangers was something reviewers called old, I saw it as tried and true. I think the only issue that I sometimes think about is a possible trans issue and while I am weary of boost in high mileage vehicles, I think Ford has a lot of experience with turbos now which gives me some peace of mind.
Toyota is taking it quite hard right now. Engine failures on their v6 turbo motors and now trans issues on the Taco? Ouch. Just coming back from Utah the other day I was back in NV, in the middle of nowhere on the 15 South before the Air Force base was a new looking Tundra getting loaded on a flat bed, couldn't help but wonder if it was an engine issue. (Edit: It was 105F, must have been tough waiting for that tow truck)
Out friend had a 6.2L engine go out on their 2021 Yukon XL when it was almost 2yr old. Then the dealer replaced it but that engine failed on the tech road test. 3rd engine was good a few months before they got hit stopped at a red light and the vehicle totaled. Their replacement they went with the diesel.
You would think with all the tools available to engineers things would be more reliable, probably cost cutting measures are what cause our issues today. Using the CAD and simulation tools to see how cheaply they can make something and be "reliable" rather than how bullet proof we can make it.
