I'm unsure that something that should be on every engine can be considered a bona fide "mod"

Maybe a site moderator can render a ruling - as "mod" can be an abbreviation for moderator.

But it looks good irrespective !

In ancient times when Beatles roamed the British Isles, a Mod was a mop headed, uptown dressed, scooter-riding dude, as opposed to a Rocker; slicked back hair, leather, chopped café Triumph or Norton. More commonly called Baldies and Greasers in the US. I was a Baldy. Wide wale corduroy pants, wingtips, Carnaby St. polkadot or paisley shirt.

While I don't own a Ranger...yet...I personally don't care if it on there. It's a beauty cover and does nothing " function" wise for the motor. Some say it keeps the water off certain areas, but it also traps heat closer to those areas too. As long as the hood has a little felt on the inside to help dampen the sound, its just an appearance feature. Older guys grew up without any covers other than the round air filter covers on top of their carbureted engines...and younger guys grew up with all the plastic covers.
As someone already stated, just one more piece to take off when you need to work on that area.

Do not recall a design where rods are in the top of the engine..... Mostly valves, cams and springs etc.

That said... saw a pic of someone that painted theirs and it did look pretty sweet (no sarcasm). I am sure that was worth 12. I have a turbo sticker that added 4.5

Turbo sticker reminds me of when "dual cams" or "DOHC" started appearing on the back of American made cars - several decades after most European and some Japanese makers employed overhead camshafts. As if GMs Quad 4 engine was revolutionary. It did produce outstanding vibes though - as in excessive NVH .

I don't have an engine cover and I will not be getting one, but please refer to TSB 21-2147, which states, "Water build up in the spark plug well(s) can lead to signs of corrosion on ignition system components. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to resolve the source of all DTCs and to install an engine appearance cover.

Mod is short for modify. There was a time when tailgates were made of thick steel and people didnt need to be helped to lower their tailgate, if you wanted to modify your vehicle you had to have the skill and equipment to do it your self. Now days with aluminum tailgates that people need help lowering them, modify means buying plastic crap to hide their engine that improves horsepower. So, Ford put a engine cover on so you cant hear the engine and also put fake engine noise in the truck so you could think that you were a truck person. Sad, like the Biden toboggan.

The Butt-O-Meter is old school, kind of like analog instruments. You must be at least 40 years old or older to fully understand the Butt-O-Meter....most of us old farts still have and rely on them...
The new era is, as Phil mentioned, is the Assometer, which is a digital application. I'm sure there are major corp.s working on supplying a special app for it.
In the meantime, if you need to get a true horsepower measurement, just find some old guy and let him rip your Ranger for awhile.....

While I understand that logic....then why don't all current models have the cover if there was a TSB? Again, the motor may trap moisture here and there...heck my Harley traps water near the plugs....never an issue. My guess is people who may detail their vehicle's engine bay MAY have not dried out the nooks and crannies of all the moister?? Either way, it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue. I would check my plugs at 10K anyways since A) they are extremely easy to get to, and B) cheap and easy to replace if need be. Again...my opinion....but if it was such an issue the cover would be standard equipment.

I thought there was a proven additional water protection from the cover.... As I recall there was a TSB regarding misfires, water found near the spark plugs, and no installed engine cover that the resolution on the TSB was to install the engine cover.

The problem is that the vast majority of Ranger owners will never experience the problem of water found anywhere near the spark plug area. I think it really applies to those who do a lot of off-roading thru water and muddy areas where moisture can/will get to the top of the engine.
I don't off-road and have never been an off-roader so I have never had the top of any engine in any of my vehicles get "wet".
Ford will not see this as a recall problem, only a TSB so if a customer comes in complaining, with a proven problem, they'' give em a cover
