I have been wanting to get ahold of a (old) clutch as i want to know how important is the (OE) positioning of the sensor - we know the support tube is to keep the sensor in position as well as a support for the harness - since the ones that have had a broken hose and no drivability issues and the sensor is (off) clock - I do not think it really matters - but not confirmed yet, I think as long as the sensor itself is stable - then the PCM can see accurate fan speed, the actual position should not matter - but while the sensor is (actually) moving then the PCM cannot accurately determine fan speed.
So yes the sensor itself needs to be (stabilized) as its recording a moving target
