Quick update: My Wallet hates me.

I have everything deleted that I want out. Sway bars are gone, charcoal canister is gone, transmission cooler and lines are gone, extra wiring the previous owner did is gone, the remaining engine mount is gone. It's time to start improving things now that I have a blank canvas.

So on order is:

  • Full Ashcroft HD axle shafts front/rear with Ashcroft air lockers, new wheel bearings and seals, and Heavy duty 4.12 Ring/pinion front/rear
  • Brake pads & Rotors, 50mm brake line extension
  • ARB 40mm heavy load lift coil springs front/rear + 1" spring spacer front/rear
  • Terrafirma shock tower
  • Fox Shocks 2.0 remote reservoir long-travel shocks front/rear
  • Terrafirma heavy duty steering arms/track bar
  • Terrafirma steering damper relocation kit + new damper
  • Fender flares + Snorkel
  • Terrafirma cranked radius arms front/rear + all new bushings
Once my 10R80 to LT230 adapter arrives, I'll purchase the transmission + engine... but I've got plenty of work ahead as boxes upon boxes get delivered.

Latest update, I've bought a welder and am working to address several of the rust spots. The driver side fender/body is by far the worst of it. I've also got some body rust penetrations on the passenger side fender well up near where the washer fluid canister was. There is some sort of undercoating on the body, and I'm not sure if it was factory or not, but as I grind through it I end up finding more and more rust hidden underneath. So I get to do more and more welding. Luckily so far I've found clean metal around just about everything.

But in the good-news department, my transmission/Tcase adapter shipped, and my MT88 Bronco Transmission arrived (currently sitting in the back of my Ranger). The transmission was on a Bronco that was in a rollover accident with only 240 miles on it - so it's essentially a brand new transmission. I ordered the shifter assembly and clutch pedal from Ford so that should be arriving shortly as well.

Once I finally get a handle on the body rust, I'll rebuild the axles and suspension with all new Ashcroft/Terrafirma parts which should be a fairly quick process.

I'm still working through the last of the rust spots, but a week long vacation slowed down progress there. I did receive the Transmission to transfercase adapter from the U.K., and it bolts up flawlessly. So the hardest question of getting the Ford engine/trans to mate up to the Landrover is now complete.

Since that's done I ended up buying the engine which should be here in a couple weeks. The High-output 2.3L Ecoboost was only $200 more, which gets me thicker cylinder walls, an upgraded head and some other design improvements. It also comes with a 63mm turbo which I'm going to rip off and put the much smaller Ranger/Bronco/Explorer turbo on. This is for two reasons, 1) I care a lot more about low-end torque and spool up time, than I care about top-end horsepower like one would on a Mustang. and 2) If I under-boost an overbuilt engine... the thing should last forever.

The last suspension components are supposed to be shipping early next week, so once rust gets completed here in a couple days it's all axles and suspension.

I’m curious to see how this turns out. We just finished ls swapping my discovery 1 but I feel like the 10 speed ecoboost combo would be pretty sweet

Well I'm not using the 10 speed. I'm using the manual 7 speed out of a Bronco.

How'd your LS swap go? Any tips for me?

I guess I glazed over the trans part and forgot the broncos also had a manual option. I feel like swapping anything into that generation discovery is fairly easy if you have a standalone harness for the engine and trans. All the factory gauges still work like the Speedo, odometer, fuel. I was able to get a tach signal from the ls alternator. I completely removed the rover ecu with no issues, bypassing the security system was as simple as grounding the a stater relay in the passenger kick panel. For simplicity sake we went with a th400 which should be indestructible. The ls power steering pump is a nice upgrade to which we were able to hook up using the rover lines

A few small things ended up slowing me down in my axle rebuild. A broken 1/4 BSPP tap for the air locker cost me the better part of a week, and my silly thought that freezing the pinion would allow me to tap on the pinion bearing without a press cost me a bit of time as I had to run to harbor freight and buy and assemble a 20T press. But I did make progress, the axle and diff is completely torn down, and new brake lines have been installed. It's a shame to throw out the old diff... it's in just about factory new condition I can't believe how nice it is. But as soon as my McMaster order arrives I'll be rolling and should have the front end taken care of in a day or two, then copy-paste on the rear end.

In my downtime it's allowed me to do some research and purchasing for the engine. I bought the A/C Compressor, smaller turbo, and 200Amp alternator from junkyards from low mileage vehicles. That being said I have run into a couple issues - I can't find what bolts are used for the bell housing to engine... Ford parts doesn't show it and when I called Ford parts they said they couldn't find it either.

But in my engine planning - I have run into my first issue that I don't have an answer for and I'm hoping to get some advice on. The Ford vehicles and engines don't have provisions for a power steering pump since power steering is accomplished via electric assist. If at all possible I'd like to keep the stock rover steering rack... but for the life of me I can't find an electrically powered power steering pump, at least not one strong enough for the job of replacing the engine powered PSP. I've dabbled at looking at HPU's for snowplows that might be able to accomplish the job - but it's a stretch. Does anyone have any ideas for this?

EDIT - Problem solved. JEMS sells a power steering pump adapter and I will use an electric AC Compressor out of a Mach-E or Tesla.

I'm still alive and still working on this project. I went and had a kid so that slows down progress ?.

The undercarriage is done. I have front/rear Ashcroft air lockers in with 4.11 gearing. Wheel hubs are rebuilt with new bearings, and new rotors/pads on all 4 corners. Extended brake lines are installed and the brakes are bled. Suspension is fully rebuilt with Terrafirma radius arms front/rear. OME Springs, and Fox reservoir shocks. Chromeoly half shafts and heavy duty CV Axles are in. I also rebuilt the rear A-arm on the rear axle which was a real bugger with how rusted it was. I bought 35's Patagonia M/T tires. I think I purchased the last set of beadlock capable Terrafirma wheels on the planet, and of course the terrafirma beadlock rings are unobtainium so I had a set custom machined for me (still awaiting delivery).

Then I found a BIG ol' pile of rust under the battery box. So I had to cut out the entirety of the battery box and fender and re-engineer and weld in a new battery box. It doesn't look quite factory but it'll do the job. I also got the LR3 snorkel mounted, it looks a little goofy from the front, but overall I'm happy with it. This allows me to have the snorkel on the side of the intake for the 2.3 Ecoboost, rather than having to do a crossover. I also have all of the trail armor purchased, just waiting for it to arrive at this point.

Next steps are (all easier said than done):

  • Mounting Clutch pedal, throttle pedal, and shifter assembly.
  • Test fit transfercase to transmission via the adapter
  • Mount the transfercase & Transmission
    • Connect & Bleed Hydraulic throwout bearing assembly
  • Install accessories onto the crate engine
  • Install engine & Fabricate engine mount brackets.
