Sales tax is 5.5% including a .5% county tax where I live. I typically pay with a debit or credit card nowadays, but when paying cash, I sometimes like to figure out the amount of my purchase including tax, if there are enough people in line ahead of me. Then when its my turn, put the exact amount of the bill on the counter, especially before they are done scanning everything.... "Ok, that comes to twelve dollars...and thirty...one ...cent...s..."

I have a really unique name so I just tell them I'm Tom. It saves me a lot of hassle. It seems like it's almost worse that I'm an average white guy from the middle of the US. The name plus that fact just makes people really short circuit.

No tipping in Korea. If you leave a tip on the table, your server will follow you out to return your money that you mistakenly left on the table.

I made this mistake in Japan a few years back sort of. Naturally I had no cell service or wifi so my translator app did not work.

I had no way to explain that the money I left on the table was to pay for my beers and was not a tip so they basically shoved the cash into my pocket and made me leave.
