Here in Texas the octane ratings are 87, 89, and 93. I ran the mid grade fuel for a little while. After deciding to make a career move and get out of that factory job, I went back to putting 87 in it. Still currently unemployed and looking for something closer to the house. The truck still runs good, no complaints.
My thoughts on the subject fwiw.
I have empathy for you. I worked off and on for that company for decades. I worked out of corporate. I, went to around 40 - 50 plants during that time. It's hard to work in meat processing plants. I believe in my encounters at Sherman, albeit a +decade ago that the employes were better than at other plants. Beef processing is under a tremendous strain right now.

Here in NM, we have 87,89 and 91 all with 10% ethanol. As a retired auto tech, I know the additive packages in higher octane fuel leave less carbon build up deposits in the combustion chamber than lower grade fuels. I personally run 91 in every vehicle I own. And since most of my vehicles are tuned it's gonna stay that way. When fuel costs go up like they are now. I do less joy riding that's all.

If I'm not mistaken that is the lower half of New Mexico as the upper half has 86, 88 and 91. 86 isn't as bad as 85, but I still wouldn't run it especially in the Ranger.
