Hey all, I purchased a canopy or truck cap, depending of where you are, and I wanted the brake light to be functional properly. I got the Curt 56584 kit to give me the opportunity to hook up a tail light converter from 2 to 3 wire ( https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0BZJT39Z9?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2 )
take signal lights signal from both lights and convert it into a brake light so I can hook it up to my 3rd brake light on the cap.
problem is, every time I start the truck, the computer tells me I have a trailer connected and my backup sensors are not working and some other options.

Ive seen that Putco has a kit for a blade bar for the tailgate that has a wiring harness that connect into the same harness as curt but DOES NOT create an error and sensors should work. Problem is they refuse to sell just the harness ( i tried many times to get it and no luck)
question is, is there anyone here that got that putco kit and has NO error in the dash? if so, let me know. I might just get the whole kit for 615$ Canadian

last thing, would tapping into the wire coming out of the brake controller under the dash would give out enough V to feed a 3rd brakelight?

If you connect anything to the (Trailer Connector) you are going to get the issue you have, its the TRM picking up that something is connected - I believe even the Putco Lightbar itself produced various issues on the Rangers.

I would have to search, but I believe you can get an adapter harness that (T-s) into the harness for the taillights at each corner of the bumper and pick up the brake light source from there vs the actual trailer connector.
I there are a few threads on here for canopy etc and that extension of the 3rd brake light.

Option: is to wiretap the trucks power feed to the CHMSL and use that for power, however it depends on what you currently have for the CHMSL (Led) and also what the canopy has (Led or Standard) - if the canopy has standard, it will trip circuit faults

I would have to dig through the threads on what specific set-up owners are using for the finicky BCM on the Ranger and its lighting outputs to be positive, but I believe they are using a (T-Harness) off of the trucks (Taillights) not the Trailer outputs and or using the CHMSL (Truck-Sourced Power)
note another option is to (Cut) the source feed to the (Existing) light and reroute the feed to the canopy (if the truck will not allow both at the same time) circuit monitoring

Luc, does your canopy have two wires coming from its third brake light above the window?

Yep it does!
I just redid mine and have some pics and can give you instructions. I’ll post them in the morning.

No problem. Does the wiring coming out of the canopy’s brake light look like this. (Not the braided stuff)

No it's just 2 wires, 1 blue, 1 black, when I apply power to each, the 2rd brake light comes on, no matter the wire, the brightness is the same

Mine has two wires - 1 blue, 1 blue with black stripe.

Blue wire is tapped to Brake Power at the taillight connector
Blue with black stripe is tapped to Ground at the taillight connector
