From the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/motor-vehicle/long-haul-truck-drivers/index.html)

" high job demands and low control (e.g. tight delivery schedules, delays) may cause stress and lead to poor health. Compared to U.S. adult workers, truck drivers have higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity."

There must be a lot of accidents involving trucks because I see several law firms repeatedly advertising for injuries related to truck accidents, if you are in CO you may have seen the "strong arm" Frank Azar on TV, billboards and so on. Personally I'm tired of seeing the same ads over and over and over. Have a friend who was hit by an out of control truck yrs back on I-70 Vail pass, serious injuries , never fully recovered and walks with a cane.
My brother died in is truck in his sleep at 48 years old. His widow swears the job played a major role in it.

My friend had to install dashcams in his fleet that's associated with the moving franchise. It's only been a few months an it's already prevented a claim against him from a lady that pulled right in front of the truck then told her lawyer he hit her.

A lot of the commercial companies want the two way cams that show what the driver was doing as well.

I worked for an oil and gas company and they had front, rear, side, and interior cameras as well as telemetrics. It affected insurance (good and bad). Telemetrics would show hard stops and cameras would save drivers from crap like false claims.

We got complaints all the time, 24/7 video proved good and bad. We knew when it was out drivers fault and when it wasn’t.

I trucked for about 17 yrs. Towards the end my weight seriously ballooned, I did develop diabetes (but there's a family history of that also to be considered), and my stress level stayed quite high even when I was home between trips. Mine was not what one would consider a healthy lifestyle at all. Sleep was more often like naps at irregular times of day or night. Meals were equally irregular in time and nature. It's a much harder life than most people realize.

To this day I have nightmares involving trucking. Sometimes Jeanie has to wake me up because I thrash and cry out in my sleep.

Clearly I'm not getting enough ice cream. 😕

Sorry to hear you still have issues from being a trucker, apparently Mark Sanchez doesn't care much for truck drivers but seems he may have messed with the wrong trucker.

I just want to blanket thank all truckers for all the crap they go through. They are a necessity and their work is truly appreciated. I realize there are good ones and bad ones, but you'll get that in any line if work. (Exception, illegal alien CDL holders. WTF is up with that anyway?)

Sadly the same situation applies over here, greedy companies setting impossibly tight schedules, increasing traffic volume, and seemingly, especially after covid, dickhead, entitled car drivers, combined with highway patrol officers so obnoxious that even regular police dislike them, all combining to make a truckies life difficult.
You can make really good money yes, but make sure that you spend and invest it wisely in your youth, because a healthy truckie in his or her sixties is a rare phenomenon. Most retire with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and coronary artery disease, from years of disrupted sleep, junk food from roadside servos, not enough physical activity, and stress. Not many jobs require you to concentrate every second, of every minute, for hours on end.

This is one of the things few people care to understand. Sitting on top of up to 80,000 lbs at highway speed and needing to be acutely aware of all conditions, all surrounding traffic, as well as your own vehicle and loads conditions is exhausting. Glad I'm done with that.

Chris @Chris M, I'm glad you're still around to talk about it, because I guarantee you that Dad and Uncle Jim would both agree with you, because they have also lived that life. Which is why I can relate to the subject. Reading through this thread was very educational. I just went to school on diesel rules and regulations, some I am aware of, and some of I wasn't. Thank you guys for the information. 🙂👍

I had an uncle who drove trucks, yes he made good money, but by God he earned it too. Some of the stories he told would curl your hair. Luckily he retired to a farm (originally came from one) which I think was the one thing that allowed him to live to a good old age.

Well its the diesel emissions that drove me to gas trucks. If I ever need a new gas truck it will be the godzilla. Just saying. Nothing newer in a diesel past a 5.9 or 7.3 powerstroke.

Yep it's getting harder and harder to get a good one here now, the the exception of the Ford 3.0 V6 diesel in the 6G Ranger and Isuzu's 3.0 litre i4 everyone is shifting to tiny 2.0 and 2.2 litre turbo diesels, even Ford, as that's their other engine option.
You can't even get an ecoboost unless you buy the Vdub version of the Ranger and then only on the top of the range model, or else buy the Ranger hybrid, or the Raptor to get the 3.0 biturbo V6 petrol. Or you could buy a Nissan Patrol as after the 3.0 "grenade" engine disaster, they don't even offer a diesel anymore, opting instead for a very nice V8.
Toyota have downsized their 4.5 litre V8 diesels to a 3.3 litre V6 and a 2.8 four.
The 3.2 litre i5 diesel in mine isn't made anymore, it seemed that reliability and build quality on them was a bit spotty, if it didn't die catastrophically when young, then it would probably go on forever, but no way to know upfront which one you had.
Too many engines blew oil pumps and piston no 5 around 100,000 km and injectors and EGR coolers around 150,000. Shame as it's otherwise a smooth running, economical, quite powerful engine.

I'm gathering reading here that the life of a trucker isn't like the rosy chivalrous high ballin life depicted in trucker movies ? Been a while since I've seen any new trucker movies but did watch part of one with Glenn Ford recently on Turner Classic Movies, done in B&W and part of the story line was Glenn and his partner getting stiffed after hauling a load of produce that they delivered late. 10-7

That was not my experience, for sure.
Hunting for a parking spot and finding none when youre getting near the end of allowed driving hours, sometimes sleeping on exit ramps or random wide spots on back roads.
Pooping in public restrooms that you'd never let your family members go near in a million years.
Truckstop showers that MIGHT have had someone wipe down since the last dri er used it, washing with washcloths you find hair embedded and drying with towels one generation removed from sandpaper.
Eating sandwiches you made from stuff in the truck for days on end because you've "got to go" and dont have time to stop and have normal people food.
Showing up on time for your pick up or delivery appointment only to find drivers ahead of you that didnt show up on time for their appointments and are putting EVERYONE behind...which sucks all the leeway time you might have had for your next trip to rest and relax your driving a bit.
Finding when you do get your turn to be loaded or unloaded the clerk attending to you is pissed at the world because HE is also now behind because of those late dri ers and is gonna cop an attitude with you because of them.
Smelling like diesel no matter how many times you wash your clothes...oh, and having to wash your clothes in the truckstop laundry room is ALWAYS a treat.
Just to name a few things not shown on TV or in the movies.
