Rebuilt Transmission

Just got my ranger back from ford. They did a complete overhaul of the transmission under warranty. Would they have changed the transfer case fluid as well? If not, should I change it? I'm right over 60k miles. Thanks

I doubt the transfer case oil was changed, unless noted. Changing it would be a good idea.

Do you have a copy of the repair order? If so the fluid for the tcase is different than the transmission. Would be listed separately on repair order.

Actually, the transfer case takes Automatic Transmission Fluid. At least that's what it says in my Owner's Manual, and that's the fluid I bought from the Ford dealership as I am going to change mine this weekend at approximately 53,000 miles.

Double check your Owner's Manual under Specifications and Capacities.

Yes, it takes ATF, but it is not the same as the transmission. The transmission takes ULV while the transfer case takes LV. Two different fluids. Unfortunately we has got to the point that all ATF is not the same.

Yes, it takes ATF, but it is not the same as the transmission. The transmission takes ULV while the transfer case takes LV. Two different fluids. Unfortunately we has got to the point that all ATF is not the same.

Thank You for clarifying . . . I need to wear my readers more often as I missed the LV vs. ULV!!! I will double-check what I purchased to make sure I have the correct viscosity. It's always the fine print that gets me.

There should be a listing for LV fluid ( tcase) and ULV fluid ( transmission). Transmission will be a large qty and the tcase will be like a quart or two.

Hows the truck drive with the rebuilt transmission? Mines currently at Ford looking at transmission. Been there since tuesday.. hope can fix the transmission, love the truck otherwise.

My truck is currently undergoing a warranty transmission rebuild at just below 60k. I asked them to add the transfer case fluid exchange to the work order.

They shouldn’t charge you for it as the fluid for the transfer case is listed as required change on the parts list in the TSB
