After 3.5 years and 47k miles I have my first issue. I went out for coffee this morning and when I pulled out of the coffee shop I noticed the rear window was all cracked. It didn't effect the sliding window. When I got home and closed the door it started crumbling. Got is covered with duct tape to hold it together until I can get to the glass shop. ☹

That’s rough. Is it freezing cold over there and the defrosters caused it or something?

Went from 70 on Friday to low 40s on Saturday. Hadn't used the rear defroster in quite a while.

Strange things happen with glass and tempura fluctuations. Could be an issue when the glass was created, a small bit of debris in the glass channel and expanding and contracting rubber moved it, or a light impact. Tempered glass while stronger and safer than plate glass, has a weakness, small sharp objects. I once had a passenger window explode on the highway. No reason I could see. There were no cars around me. Good luck with the repairs.

Did you use remote start? It may have come on then.

Nope, I didn't use remote start. FWIW, I don't recall ever seeing the rear defroster come on with remote start. I never use AUTO Climate control and have always had to manually turn on the rear defroster.

Interesting, if it's cold out, mine always comes on, doesn't seem to matter if I have climate on or off. Same when it's hot out, AC comes on.

Was the sun on the rear window. Or was the sun only on one part of it, some times high temperature variations across the glass can cause this. The variations in expansion will sress the glass and slight imperfections will cause it to crack

I had an '85 Ford Escort years ago that had a rear (hatchback) glass that kept shattering. I must have replaced it three times. Usually I'd park the car, come back hours later and the glass had collapsed into a million pieces.

My wife had the sunroof explode on her way to work one morning out of the blue. Good thing nobody was in the back seat as it made quite the mess!

Maybe some kid with a BB gun? Would be hard to see where the initial impact would be.
