Hope everyone is having a good day! I'm helping out a friend who has a 2000 Ford Ranger. It was given to him by a family member who is no longer with us. The transmission is going out, and we want to get a rebuilt used one, but we're not certain exactly which one to look for. The one that's currently on it is the P97GT 7006 BBR. The reason we are unsure is that we recall being told the engine may have been modified or possibly changed out, and maybe the transmission was too. If someone could help me with what details to note when looking for one that will fit, I would greatly appreciate it.

Is the truck RWD only or 4x4? There wasn't really any variation in transmissions, any transmission from 2023 on or a properly rebuilt one will do.

In a 2000, it should be a 4R44E if it's the 2.5 or 3.0.

Basically Ford used the same 10R80 in the 5G Ranger although there was an important internal component change (or two) in 2023 for reliability. Changing the transmission requires some reprogramming of the computer control system so be prepared for that.

As far as costs I'm not sure I can give you a real number or range.

That's clearly not a 5G tranny in those pics.

Remove starter, any exhaust pipes in the way. Take cover off of torque converter and turn flywheel with a screw driver. There should be 6 nuts to remove. Support old trans with something, then remove all bolts from bell housing. Transmission comes out. Might need to jack up truck to get it out.

be careful with reinstalling the TC because the input can be damaged.

flush all trans line and replace trans cooler, it holds metal flakes and can kill new trans.

Pro tip ..

These transmission like to have the center shaft from the trans slip out part way when you remove them. Before you install the trans, make sure the TC is seated all the way. If you find yourself installing the trans and the last 1/8" to 1/4 will not tighten, don't just crank it down. It probably is not seated correctly.

To resolve this, you need to pull the bell housing reseat the shaft, just wiggle it till it pops in, you'll know. Then reinstall the bell housing , the TC, and try again. Should tighten back up with no issues.

I have uninstalled and installed these transmissions lots of times.

thanks for all the replies and all its appreciated very much.
I have the transmission currently supported by a jack, and all necessary lines and connections have been disconnected. The catalytic converter, driveshaft, and starter have already been removed. I can turn the flywheel using the harmonic balancer at the front. However, I'm having difficulty removing the four bolts due to a metal-like gasket located between the bellhousing and the engine. Since I assume this gasket will not be reused, would it be acceptable for me to break it off to access the bolts? Additionally, how many bolts are used to secure the transmission to the engine? Am I correct in thinking there are six: two lower, two mid, and two uppers? Thank you for your help

You don't want to destroy that as you will need to reuse it. It isn't a gasket, but a thin metal spacer between the engine and bell housing. There should be a small removable cover at the bottom of the bell housing that can be removed to access the torque converter stud nuts.
