Well, I got an update from the stealership today…they tell me the shuddering is the rear brake rotor and the thunking is the rear pinion gear. I have a bumper to bumper ESP from Ford and the dealer threw in lifetime powertrain warranty when I purchased. I better not be outa pocket for any rear end work, but I assume brake issue will be on me. I’ll update as I know.

Glad they found out what's wrong. At least now it can get fixed and be back on the road and off road soon. If you only have to pay out of pocket for the brakes I'd call that a win and be happy it wasn't any worse.

Here's a great example why I bought a Ford ESP as you never know what could happen. Sure you could put a couple thousand away and roll the dice but I bet when it's all said and done it'll be much more than that. Good luck!

Brakes are always considered a consumable item when it comes to Warranty and ESP. Glad to hear you have drivetrain coverage for the pinion gear.

Ford ESP should cover the rear end, no matter what level ESP you have.
Base Care and above covers lots of brake parts, but not pads and rotors.

That’s great info. I thought I bought the bumper to bumper last May for 48k miles or 3 years. Well within on time and mileage.

Seems weird that rear brakes are the problem on this truck. All my other trucks it was the front brakes.

Fix Or Repair Daily?:(
Of course it’s my first Ford after many Toyotas and a Frontier I drove 11 years and 243k miles with exactly no maintenance issues other than brakes and a couple sensors.

It seems like this is a trend with newer vehicles. The rear brakes are used for things like traction control, etc so in many cases they wear out before the fronts do, unlike how it used to be. The rears would last a LONG time.

I will be replacing my rear rotors very soon for this same reason.

Update: dealer called after lunch...now they say its the Slip Joint TSB and pinion. All covered under Ford ESP. Looks like several business days on parts. I'll be making use of a loaner starting Monday.

Latest is...we're waiting on parts and the tech is backed up with work ("the tech"). Going in to get a loaner tomorrow morning. Guesstimate from service rep is "several days". My guess is that does not include this week. Been there a week + already.

Update: parts are in and should be installed tomorrow. Yesterday was 2 weeks since I dropped it off. I made the appointment a month before that. We’ll see. I’ll post up list of parts etc once I know what they actually did. Service rep is definitely not a mechanic ?
