I don't think they are speed based but more about sensing the lights in front of you.

I live in a hilly/curvy area and the auto high beams almost give me an epileptic seizure with their constant flipping.

Every time I top a hill or round a curve I encounter a street light or other type of lighting that just happens to be at the right angle to appear to be an oncoming vehicle.

I've had several vehicles with the feature and NONE of them have worked correctly in this area.

If I get out on the highway, they work fine.
Same with me. Mine is triggered by the reflection of my high beams off street signs on curvy roads. I turned off auto high beams after using it twice.

I turn them off because the interfere with my fog lights, i.e. when the high beams come on, they shut off my fog lights.

Another vote for not liking them. They never seemed to work right in the areas I'm in and I end up either blinding others or they don't turn on when I want them too. Like lane assist I just leave them both turned off.
My CX-5 has the feature and it works perfectly. It activates at 20mph. The headlights move left / right when turning to keep the light pointed to where you are going. It has an outstanding headlight system. Far superior to the Ranger.

The Ranger auto hi beam system activates on my truck at 32mph. It is easily confused and sometimes does not go back to high beam after passing an oncoming car. If I turn the light knob 1 notch CCW, then back to auto it immediately reactivates.

If you desire hi beams at 30mph or less you gotta go Old School, and do it manually. We have hundreds of deer in our neighborhood and we do not have street lights. High beams are required driving. The deer have no fear of cars and are frequently feeding on the shoulder of the road. They will cross the road like a herd of sheep or cattle. It is stop and wait when they do,

@Ninong I fixed this with Forscan, Turn on Bambi mode and fog lights stay on.

Need the fogs here in deer country!

I've had great success with auto high feature...contrary to popular beliefs, I drive at night with just the head lights and DD amber fog pods (standard version) and this hasn't offended not one single person in my entire 130k miles...having adjusted the lamps after level is very key...this combined with auto high is very effective...yeah I cringe a little when the car ahead comes around the corner and I see it before the system does but it does work as advertised...for me anyway...

This is how it is here (was the same back in MA) in AR. I don't drive a lot at night but when I do there are deer all over the place here. Not just 1 or 2 but sometimes a pack of 6 will be crossing the road. There are no street lights on the side streets and the main roads have very few of them so high beams are a must here too. Another thing is the armadillo here. They're about as dumb as opossum and are alway in the road and just stop and look at you. lol They're splattered all over the roads here.

We need the fogs here in raccoon and opossum country because it makes it easier to line them up.

Kidding - I wouldn’t want to hit one - they can be big and cause a lot of damage.

I saw a Mercedes that had some body kit damage and a broken AMG wheel after hitting a raccoon. Those suckers can be 30+ lbs.

I don't see them here in central NC, but when I lived in NW Louisiana they were EVERYWHERE. 50 years ago in East Texas, the locals cooked up their home made chili with them. Said it wasn't real chili without armadillo!

I lived 5 miles from Waskom, TX right on the state line on I-20.

I've had 30 in my backyard at one time. They birth their young in my backyard! And my garden was cleaned out overnight. I gave that idea up after trying several possibilities, but they always found a way in.

At night it's literally hit or miss...the deer run across the road in packs and trying to thread through them with a 5,000 lb truck is all luck...my last encounter at 65mph on a 5 lane involved a half dozen deer...missed the first one...second hit somewhere behind the door and I cursed for the next 5 miles till I was able to pull off...somehow, the guy bounced square off my rear wheel saving me the grief of any body work...

My lariat has the auto high beam but seems it will not auto up when going slow. Any way to change that? Maybe in forscan?
I have a '21 Lariat and I don't have that problem. Of course I don't have a BMW to compare with either. Lol

Now I finally learn why it is called Bambi mode. I had set it in Forscan because it seemed like a good idea.

Q: Why did the possum cross the road?
A: To get halfway to the other side

Our roads around here are covered with squirrels who can't make a decision.
