I have 14' garage doors. They have commercial openers on them. When I lose power pulling the release handle won't allow the door to open. The door hits the mechanism the chain pulls. They are half HP openers.

I'm looking at a battery generator. They have solar as well as plug in charging. I'd keep it charged off the wall outlet, don't care about the solar ability. These run anywhere from a hundred bucks to over a grand. I just want to open an close the door during an outage to get out an close the door behind me. I've been stuck in the garage 2 times in the last two years.

Any electric knowledgeable guys here? Here's what I'm considering. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CJ972JGL/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A35O9G9427CL25&th=1

Here is why the door gets caught when you disconnect it.

The battery generator you reference will supply about 2 amps of 110 volts AC. The door opener requires about 4.5 amps of AC current, so it doesn't look like it will work for you.

Thanks. I didn't notice an amp rating just watts. I'll have to do some searching.

Can you raise the opener and track, so the release mechanism clears the door? A door opener with built-in battery backup is available.

It's flat on the ceiling

I might have to look for a used gas generator. I didn't want to have to deal with a gas one but you gotta do what you gotta do

something is wrong, from the picture those doors should open with the release unit pulled.
have someone from a door opener company look at it.

Yes, when a door is properly installed and the springs are at the proper tension, you should fairly easily operate them manually. It is a safety hazard otherwise. I used to work at a door company and installed hundreds of doors. Something is not right. Get a professional out there.

FYI, we recently got a new garage door and opener installed and we opted for the "wall mounted" opener. It has a built in battery backup and is INCREDIBLY quiet. We absolutely love it after having a chain/belt drive opener all these years.

I concur with others that you should get a professional out to figure out why it won't open - that isn't right and is a safety issue.

Be sure the power source can handle the motor starting surge that can be up to 10x the running watts depending on the motor type.

The door is installed correctly and functions properly. The problem is lack of clearance when you try to manually open. I know how a garage door works lol. The previous owner who built the barn/garage had large equipment for work an wanted the biggest doors he could fit so it's a tight squeeze. I'm not going to replace 6 year old openers that work fine for no reason. I don't think the over the door ones would work either since there's no wall above the door to mount to.

The pictures show how the openers are attached directly to the ceiling with no gap for the door to clear. You can also see the bracket that the door attaches to. The black arm drops when you disconnect it but the giant bracket blocks the door. It's a unique situation for sure. I just want a battery backup if there's one that will handle it for under $300. If not I'll go the gas route.

It's just the result of the way it was built. There is a side door so I can get in an out if the power is out, just can't get my car out.
