I dunno, I think this could have been better thought out. I realize you don't want to replace perfectly working equipment. But the afore mentioned wall mount idea sounds like a good option. Or perhaps an extended chain/rail that mounts well behind the travel of the door.
It is still a safety issue if you need to get your vehicle out in a hurry. Like a fire or if you need to get to the hospital fast.
All doors should open completely with or without power. I have installed doors with rediculously low overhead clearance, and many other crazy issues. I made sure they all operated manually or electrically without issue.
