On mine it stopped working this morning, umm went on the highway going around 60 and some goober decided to cut me off and i braked hard and engine revved to 5000 rpm , slipped into neutral, what the hell was that. no engine light on! and stayed for 10 seconds at 5000 rpm, not happy, idle was surging, but the dealer said they could not find anything...noticed when coming to a stop the idle kicks up and have to hard pedal the brake i do not like that...missing my Chevy....

You probably got the gas and the brake at the same time. The trans will come out of gear, and once it's revved way up, it take a few seconds to come back down.

The surge you feel is actually the transmission downshifting, the engine shuts off fuel, and leaves the trans engaged so that it's still spinning the lurch you feel is just inertia.

Hook up an OBDII reader and monitor injector duty cycle and or LB/hr fuel rate, and you'll see it's approaching 0 during those events. It just feels funny because there are so many gears it's always doing something, and that's way different than 5 and 6 speed auto's that basically go into neutral or disengage the torque converter below 10mph when you are stopping.

The engine is still revving while in park, been driving trucks for over forty years. and have raced and built vehicles, Thank you for the idle info. so I will contact Ford, this is fifth time for revving issue, and only 489 miles on truck, 2-of the times was sitting at a light with foot on brake only and started revving, tires spinning, slipped in it park and revved for about 8-9 seconds more, I read on line about a indecent a 2019 Ranger was slowing down for School bus and the engine revved he smashed in to back of bus. panicked.

Yep, that definitely sounds FUBAR. I'd drop it off, and not pick it back up if that was the case. I just know that the gas and brake are much closer in height in this truck than in my Focus.

The amount of rev hang on the platform is also quite excessive in my opinion, but it should definitely calm down after at most 2-3 seconds. Sounds like something is broken.

Here's some ROW rangers that appear to exhibit the same problem.

Second edit. I watched both of the vids, and that's runaway diesel, not tires... my bad.

When you set info center to Auto Start/ Stop, the screen will tell you why the engine didn't stop.. I use it, and, I've seen Low Temp, HVAC, Engine Warming, Battery Charging, Steering .. (Something), Steering turned, and Wait for next Stop on my display.

Guess I am used to it shutting down as we have a Prius as our main car. So I see it as saving on gas and cleaner air.

Breaking news! In the town I grew up in, I just had a report of a "newer" ford Ranger driving into and through a BP gas station. I'm still trying to get confirmation that it was indeed a 2019, but this could be "big".

It is actually worth quite a bit of fuel on the EPA test cycle. It may be a bit annoying but my Fusion does not have it and sitting at traffic lights the little meter on the cluster for average fuel economy can lose a lot with the car idling. With the Ranger it 'freezes' the number at where it was when you stop at the light. So it does work. It may not make a lot of sense in a rural environment but in the city it does.

Mine had not worked all week doing short 10 mile round trips...today after a 50 mile run, it started working again. So the battery must not have had the correct charge as indicated in the info screen.
...it must save a little gasoline, since my MPGs were down about 2 .

I have found that if I come to a really smooth stop the system will not kill the engine. If I want it to work all I have to do is brake in a way that causes the truck to rock just a little bit. Works every time.

My S/S stopped working 3 or so years ago. Just started working again the last couple of weeks. Not even going to try and figure it out. The battery was replaced about 2 years ago so that wasn't it.

Hello,

Today on my drive to work I was stopped at a light, I slightly took my foot off the brake and the ASS tried to start the engine but it was a ROUGH start. Engine sounded like it wasn't firing on all cylinders. It eventually got going but there was some warning (Orange ASS symbol) that popped up for a split second with a message I couldn't read fast enough. Now In my fuel economy settings it shows ASS not available.

I do not believe this is battery related as I got the battery changed about 5 weeks ago. Also it does not say "battery charging "

Kept driving all seemed normal. Parked the car and turned it off and on and that was fine, but still not ASS.

Thoughts?

No CEL or error in Ford Pass yet

I merged this with an older thread. There's a few good answers and post #13 & #25 explains most reason why it stops working.

Thanks. Not entirely sure those answers apply in this situation. I'm pretty sure I met all conditions, plus the fuel economy gauge will tell you why ASS is not working at the moment but I am not getting any message there. Just says unavailable. Also ASS was working fine earlier on my drive.
