Tires Size Question: 255/70/r17

Hello!

I am new to the Ranger Forum, recently got my 2020 XLT and I am thinking about upgrading the tires soon. I have done quite a bit of reading on this forum and havent seen too many people go with the above mentioned tire size.

My stock size is 255/65/r17. I know going to 70 isnt a huge difference but I just want something slightly taller that fills out the wheel wells. I am assuming going with 255/70/r17 will have no issues in terms of rubbing, but hoping I can get some feedback and confirmation with this change. I do not have a lift, just stock suspension and dont have plans to add a lift for a little while because $$$ (hoping I wont need to add spacers or do anything with the offset of the wheel).

One other question - if I get a taller tire, will that affect how much I am able to tow or have in the bed of the truck at all because of the taller tire? Never owned a truck before so just curious.

You can go to up to 265/70/17 on a stock truck.

Your towing/payload may be affected a little bit but is dependent on the weight of the tires. I would expect the larger tires to weigh a little more but chances are that the combined weight is probably a negligible amount. Let's say each tire weigh 10 lbs more for a total of 40 lbs of towing/payload lost if my understanding is correct. More importantly would be how much things like your speedometer is affected be the increase in tire size

I have never used forscan before so I’m afraid I’m not much help with that but I’m certain larger tires is such a common mod that someone will be able to help you get started. There is a stickie in the electronics sections pertaining to forscan and that’s where I would make my start.

That said, I was unable to go larger than a certain circumference (as the thread mentions), but I was able to get the value large/close enough that my speedometer matches the Waze GPS speed now.

I have never used forscan before so I’m afraid I’m not much help with that but I’m certain larger tires is such a common mod that someone will be able to help you get started. There is a stickie in the electronics sections pertaining to forscan and that’s where I would make my start.

The tire shop should be able to do the calibration to correct speedometer, when I put taller tires on my F150 they did it after they mounted tires back on truck.

How would they do that? Do they have a tool that they go in and do it through obd port? Can any tire shop theoretically be able to do such a thing?

Was it a local shop? Ive called around to a few places and they just refer me to the dealer (which I might see if they can help with recalibration).

Yes, it was a local tire shop. One of the techs had a scanner and did it. I got the impression it was what they used to calibrate the TPMS sensors with as well.

I always thought 265 was stock?
I have much larger tires and I do not notice much of a difference at all in handling, towing or MPG
in fact on bad days I get 20mpg but on average I get 22mpg, and hauling some pretty big loads
I say go big or go home LOL

Some will, some won't. Discount will not.

I went from stock 265/65/17 to 255/70/17. "Micheline Defender LTX M/S". Negligible difference on speedometer, mileage did improve a little, 30k on the tires and they still look new. Awesome tire! I do have a 2" lift in the front, however you will have no issues.

255/70’s aren’t enough different enough to bother adjusting in Forscan. 265/70’s fit stock and were a factory optional size in 2019-2020 and won’t affect towing capacity. I have 265’s and did adjust in Forscan, 2400mm was perfect.
