Wouldn't blame him, the way you guys went off the deep end. Duke was the only one who gave an answer the even applied. The European Ranger went through some minor updates and they were designated by mark numbers. We would probably call them face-lifts here in NA. Changes but not enough to call it a new generation.
The term "mk" (read "mark") essentially means that it's a variant. It might be a minor update, or it could be a fairly significant one, depending on the variant.

Possibly the most well-known example of all of this is the Supermarine Spitfire of WWII fame; it went through 24 "mks" in it's roughly quarter-century of service. Some of the differences were just that they used a different part (i.e: engine, etc.) either because of which manufacturer was able to supply enough or because it brought about a performance improvement, but other times it was because it was a design adaptation for a different tasking (i.e. photo-recon vs. fighter vs. fighter-bomber, etc.)
My grandfather flew these during the war; he went through a Mk 5, 9 & 16, so whenever I see one at an airshow or museum, I pay close attention to the Mk & try to find the "right" one in his memory.

While we're on the topic, why are we considered 5th gen Rangers though?
Wikipedia has us as 4th gen? (I know, not the best source of information). Is there some refresh we are considering as a new generation?

Saying mkX is a VW thing.
Not really a VW thing, (although us VW peeps use it a lot lol) Technically in the states the different VW chassis are designated with an "A" as in A1 or A2. When MK is used, some say it wrong (em kay ?) which is an abbreviation of the correct term "mark". If you've ever watched old Top Gear, Clarkson used the term "MK1" or "MK2" on other brands as well, so it's a European thing really. I believe the term is also used in the Aero industry as well.

Not playing for me either. Maybe it’s an Android vs Apple thing?

There was a whole discussion on this some time back, but I don't remember exactly how it resolved itself. I think it has to do with what you consider a "generation" - and there are some differing opinions on that.

They made a “tank” for our military in ‘43.

If I recall correctly Rob, there have been a few threads on this - maybe the answer lies in one of Phil’s back stories - any volunteers to go read them all again?

Now you made me go look.....

This seems to be the definitive version, since our own Phil weighed in to agree that we own 5G Rangers:

https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/4th-or-5th-gen.12628/

Although people are still debating it.....

And now I keep reading and in this one:

https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/5g-for-fourth-generation.13711/

Phil says he doesn't know!

So..... The mystery continues....

I'm sure he was just momentarily distracted by Tito nudging his foot and forgot what he was talking about originally.
We all know that Phil does too so either know!

Sorry for those that can't play the Mercury Ranger video. It's a .webm file that plays fine on PC, but maybe not on phones. Try this mp4:

Edit, sorry I don't know how to convert properly. trying again

For American aircraft, the "MK" prefix is usually not used
Hughes UH1B, C130J, Embraer 300E etc.
Related, Mustang Mach-e. Mach is a measurement of the velocity of an object that is moving near or over the speed of sound in air. Mach 1 equals 761.17 mph. Most commercial jets cruise at around mach 0.87,or 87% of the speed of sound, or 622 mph There is no such thing as mach-e. it is gibberish; just Marketing's bastardization tying in a storied Mustang model name with the chick "e" designator for all things BEV. Close rant.

Nope. Do you have a You tube channel? It's free and a universal platform for uploading videos to text messages, other websites, email, etc.
