With the upfront acknowledgement that almost nothing matters less than this: which generation do our beloved trucks belong to? Wikipedia has the generations broken down differently, and states that the current gen is actually the 4th.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Ranger_(Americas)

So which is it? If we're in the 4th gen how did this confusion start? I don't even care except for storing this useless knowledge deep in my head until I can "well actually" someone in the future and have everyone present think I'm a nerd.

I did some forum searches for 4g 4th gen and Wikipedia but couldn't find anything on this.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed, but here's my take--
Gen 1---83-88
Gen 2---89-92
Gen 3---93-97
Gen 4---98-04
Gen 5---05-11
Gen 6---19-??

My take is '98 and on is 4th gen which is why this is the Ranger5G forum not Ranger 6G forum.

Hi Doug,

This is what I believe as well. Inside the company we did not use the G designation. We had program numbers, Example PN105. Pick up, North American and 105th program to be approved by the Ford Top Brass. What would have made the current Ranger 6G is the PN273...a total frame up vehicle....our POS CEO J. Nasser scotched this great vehicle for luxury car programs that did not follow suit. Ranger became an orphan after that....and the worry that Ranger was eating into F150 sales and Ford's lust to keep F150 the leading pickup truck. Fortunately Nasser was fired and left, tail between legs. His quote..."Mistakes were made".... What BS!!!. He mad the mistakes all by himself with his inflated EGO....

'83-'92- Generation 1

'93-'97- Generation 2

'98-'12- Generation 3

ROW T6 Ranger- Generation 4

'19-Current- Generation 5

'22-???- Generation 6 and a return to a global design.
Hi Doug,

Well....inserting the ROW Ranger is interesting, but how do you account for the ROW Ranger in 2001 and the South American Ranger in 1998...SA Ranger was Super Crew only as that is what SA loves and demanded... There are a few more variants of the Ranger. ROW Ranger was first made in Thailand and it was on my watch but the Aussies really were in charge and I left it alone as I had enough on my plate. We tried to bring the SA crew cab up to Federal standards but there were way too extensive modifications required to federalize it.

I accept the 2019 Ranger as called 5G but not sure

BTW...the original Ranger had the code name Yuma.

I don't know, maybe those don't count because there was home market trucks in production at the time?

Ok, old thread, I know, but I still don’t understand how the current Ranger got labeled as the 5th Generation Ranger? Wiki says we are 4th Gen even though they show that there are 8 (US) iterations listed on their page, with the Gen 1 getting 1 facelift, and the Gen 3 getting 3 facelifts. What gives? How does a new generation start or end? How did we land on 5? I’m confused.

I doubt it has anything to do with the ROW, which is the same T6 platform as our current Rangers, and itself has undergone 3 facelifts. Matter of fact, the next generation Ranger is still designated as the T6.2 (2nd iteration of the same T6 platform), so basically, the same bones. So if it’s not from a facelift, and not from a new platform, how does a new generation get identified?

Then there is also the very obvious factoid that ours are gen 5...
If they weren't, we would NOT BE HERE !!!
As the forum title specifically indicates...Ranger 5G...
If ours are not gen 5, than what are we doing here ???

So generations get a mid cycle refresh look at the f150 for example the 21 is the new generation and the predecessors had some minor changes midway through their cycle usually 3 to 5 years in
