My 19 lariat s/s has been acting up lately. The engine shut off 3 times while driving. All at a stop, auto start/stop activated and engine off but when attempting to re-start failed with sensor warnings. CEL and codes:
P068A
U3013-16
U0420
U0100
C0051-86

Overnight I had battery on a charger/tender that read charged - CEL went away. Went to work and it would not re-start when leaving. Had to get it jumped from roadside assistance. Tech said battery must have a bad cell. Took battery to ford and they said its testing 12v but needs to be charged.

Put on charger and it said 77%, so let it fully charge. This morning was dropping kid off a school and waiting for doors to open, s/s shut vehicle off so I was stopped and it tried to start a few min later and couldn't. Hill assist and other sensors flashing, no CEL though.

Battery a few months old. 54k miles.

Before I leave it at dealership for them to figure out, any ideas?

All of those codes relate to Low Voltage - Mainly P068A - PCM Power Relay, dropping off due to voltage issue, all the others (related) due to the Ignition Switch in (Run) and engine shut down (all communication faults)

So, you either have a bad battery / charging system issue or a bad PCM Power Relay not staying closed. (Relay or Wiring issue)

I do not think (ASS) is actually activating - Its designed not to with low voltage issues.
The Low Voltage from the battery / charging system or Voltage Loss at the PCM Power Relay is the issue.

Most Likely - BAD BATTERY

thank you so much!

I just watched the video in the forum about the BMS. I am not sure if while charging the battery I was before or after the BMS.

Is that something completely unrelated?

If you connect the charger to the negative terminal the BMS system will not recognize that it was charged and can continue to give warnings even after the battery is charged.

that new battery should be under warranty, 3 years. My wife's battery went out after 2 1/2 year got a brand new one from Ford dealer.

the vehicle was towed to ford yesterday. Hopefully something simple like battery just very frustrating since its 3 months old.

My wife's new Bronco Sport battery is already bad at 4,000 miles. From my experience, Ford's warranty process dictates recharging the battery, and their threshold for bad voltage on a battery is really low. It's frustrating because the symptoms will still persist, and Ford's warranty fixes will not actually fix the problem until you replace the battery. Hopefully, they will replace the battery this time.

The funny thing with my wife's little Bronco Sport is that they did us a solid and replaced the battery immediately. She got into her car to leave the dealership and the new battery was dead and had to be replaced for her to get home.

IMO, BMS as configured by Ford is brutal on battery life. But you gain that extra 0.1 mpg in gas savings! It also has a detrimental effect on the starter and engine life. Most wear on lubricated surfaces occur during startup of the engine.

You can use the same logic on tires, over inflate them, suffer from rough ride and excessive tire wear, but your mpg will slightly increase.

From a big picture perspective I think the trade off isn't positive. The mpg (and CO2) saved by using the Ford BMS strategy is more than offset by manufacturing and recycling/reclamation costs of the premature demise of undercharged batteries and over inflated tires. And that is not considering the excess labor and service intervals. And once out of warranty, it will separate you from your $$ at an faster rate.

Again, JMO.

Certainly could be bad battery but my first question from my own experience is after the battery was replaced, did you reset the BMS? I didn't know about it and did not do that, then a few months after replacing mine I had these same problems.
When the dealer looked at it they said the BMS readings were all messed up since it hadn't been reset for the new battery which was causing the problems. Reset the BMS, had one more occurrence of an issue the next morning, but then no more issues after running around all that day. It's been a year-ish since with no more problems.

great info. Yes I did re-set the BMS (pressing the break/flashing high beams) back when I replaced the battery. Also had to re-set the auto up/down window .

Doesn't BMS reset overnight > 8 hours off?
This is what I have read. And below is what Ford states in their manual......

If the reset is not carried out [using a scan tool] it takes approximately 8 hours for the BCM to learn the new battery state of charge. During this 8 hour period, the vehicle must be undisturbed, with no doors opened orkeyless entry button presses. If the vehicle is used before the BCM is allowed to learn the new battery state of charge, engine off load shedding can still occur and a message may be displayed.
