Hi all,

I'm in the middle of a road trip about 1000 miles from home, and heard a funky clunk sound, and then got the little wrench light that popped up. See attached picture for what the manual says.

Anybody have experience with this? I seem to lose power of I try to punch it (i.e. to pass someone), but it seems to reset when I turn off the engine and the behaves ok as long as I don't push it too hard. Will I be able to make it home before I have to take it to the dealership, or am I SOL?

I looked underneath the truck and didn't see anything obviously wrong, but I'm not a mechanic, either.

Hey man - did the truck pass any codes to the Ford Pass app? Usually it elaborates on why it threw the code in the app

The clunk is an interesting clue. Check for a hose or something under the hood that might have disconnected under pressure? Loose clamp etc.

The symptoms you're describing remind me of when I had a head gasket failure on my turbo Audi. Giving more gas created more pressure in the head and created misfires and loss of power. Any misfires as far as you can tell or did the tach needle hold steady aside from loss of power?

The clunk could simply be an after effect of the problem. That said I would check Ford pass about and DTC's that may be set. With that I would recommend taking it to a local nearby Dealer if under warranty. Perhaps they can make it quick, or worst case not so much.

I don't know about the clunk, but I got the wrench when my truck loss power. I could start it and drive about 200 yards and it would lose power again. Turned out it was the serpentine belt had a little tiny half moon shape hole on one edge. I don't remember the exact mileage when it happened but truck was almost brand new, maybe 1000 miles or less. Had to have it towed to the Ford dealership.

EDIT TO ADD: I thought maybe a critter had chewed on the belt and I was going to have to pay for it. Nope, service manager said the hole was too perfect. Got fixed under warranty.

Hi all,

I've been without internet access all day, so haven't been able to post an update.

About 10 minutes after I first posted, I managed to find a mechanic that was open; I was in backwoods Tennessee at the time (cue banjo music). Anyway, he was able to run the diagnostic scan, and it's my turbo that crapped out. He checked the connections, and they all seem secure, so it's something with the turbo itself.

The good news is that I'm able to limp my way home, I just have to drive as if I were towing at near-max capacity. I can move along, but my acceleration sucks, especially on uphills. At least I can get the truck home to have it looked at by my local dealership, instead of trying to find one on the road.

I've made it about halfway home, and am in northern WV for the night. Limping along sucks, but on the bright side I'm less likely to get a speeding ticket (watch Karma come and take a huge chunk out of my rear tomorrow!)

Thanks to everyone for your responses, and thanks @DukeCanBuildit for the text messages and the heads up about the storm. Hopefully that won't give me too much trouble. I'll let y'all know when I make it back.

@Msfitoy, your response worries me; would this get covered by the powertrain warranty? God, I hope so; I still haven't paid off Santa's bill.

If you are within the 5/60 then you should be good with the powertrain warranty. That said what @Msfitoy and myself were discussing were two totally different things. His was the Transmission. Mine was a totaled truck after hitting a Cow..... I mean Chupacabra!

If you have warranty left, I'd get this sorted quickly before it expires...
