I’ve never done this before, but seriously thinking about Ford Protect for my 2022 Ranger.

It’s currently down for the valve body and transmission work, as it’s been experiencing harsh 3-4 shifts and delayed engagement in “R” causing the tires to squeal when shifting from “P” to “R”.

I’ve also had the infotainment fixed under warranty, the rear end re-sealed due to a leak, parking brake boot issues, and alignment drifting.

Not to mention the glitches of the Nav screen getting locked up and hot to the touch (software updates seem to help, but has not fixed everything).

It seems as if Ford Protect has plans that go up to 10 years and 175k, and with my 16.5k miles per year I’m thinking of going with the maximum plan with $0 deductible.

Problem is, this is over a $6k warranty. I’ve never bought a factory warranty and for sure don’t want to spend $6k if it only pays for $2k in repairs.

My question is, is there a “sweet spot” in Ford Protect to get the maximum coverage while not spending an arm and a leg? Should I go for the $200 deductible, $100 deductible, a shorter plan (maybe 8 years), or just put the funds in a high yield savings account?

My truck has not been perfect but I do still love the truck.

Where did you get that quote? Whatever you do, do not buy directly from Ford or most dealers.

For the best deal/discount on a genuine Ford Protect warranty, go with either Granger (a sponsor on this site), Flood Ford (online), or Zeigler Ford (online). I have purchased 2 Ford Protect warranties from Zeigler. If you use the code PAYINFULL with Zeigler they take another $250 off the price.

Can't say on the warranty, but I'll offer the life advice instead:

Mine wasn't cheap. $6k if it helps you sleep better, and especially if already having issues, may well be worth the lower stress level alone.

Seems like these plans wind up around $100/month for 24 months or so that's cheap medicine for something causing you stress

If you're concerned, I say do it.

I’ve not had any of the issues you described but I still bought the Ford Flood ESP, 8 yrs/100k with $50. Deductible and I also got the key service. Doubt I’ll reach mileage because I only drive about 5-6 k a year. The ESP has already paid for itself with 1 warranty repair and 1 key replacement that I had to have done after the 3/36 ran out. If I remember correctly, the ESP plan was around $1500. and it was well worth it for me.

I have never really fell for any extended service plans for (ANYTHING)
BUT - with this truck and thanks to this forum and all the noted expensive issues, I have decided to get a ESP.
It was a hard decision as I have the ability to perform any and all maintenance. BUT the parts alone for a Transmission or Heater Box Assy, would pretty much exceed the cost of the extended warranty, and I don't really want to tackle a Transmission Rebuild, R&R With Junkyard Tranny (Yes)
Rip apart the dash for the Heater Box (Yes), I have done this a few times (Heater Cores)
I have not taken any vehicle in for maintenance, since High-School, except for things like alignments, tires, exhaust work (Cutting Torch / Welder), exhaust work is cheap labor anyway. I have access to one, but a muffler shop is just easier.

Anyway: For me and my state, Grainger has the best pricing. I think I have decided just to pony up the money for the Premium Care - 10yr - 100K. I will hit the 10yr mark before 100k.
Ref the Link Below, and you can see a visual side by side compare of the plans (Coverage-Difference) vs the brochures.
My thought is spending the extra cash on the Premium vs Extra ($500 Difference) and this leaves me with the option of fixing it myself vs dealer for pretty much the same as the current warranty I have. Except the small cosmetic items that are excluded after the Bumper-to-Bumper drops at 36k

Link: Provides a good side by side comparison of all the plans.

| Ford Protect Extended Service Plans

One item to note on the Side by Side Compare
In AC & Heating - The Heater Control Assy, is not listed on any plan except the Premium.
However, the Brochure Shows it is covered on the Extra (so ????)

As a retired ASE Master tech , I have enough sense to know that there are some things on these new trucks and cars that I simply don't have access to especially the electronics . That being said , I bought the ESP 8 year 100,000 mile Premium Care. Is it worth it? Well with 35,000 miles on the truck I have only had it back to the dealer once for the "bump stop" issue which I knew what was wrong and how to fix it , but I wanted it documented with Ford , just in case something popped up later .
When I got there for the app. at 9 AM I was told it would be the end of the day or maybe the next day they would let me know what they found out . I said it should only take 1 hour to do the diagnostic , and the service writer said ,with a smirk look that it takes as long as it takes . So I said fine I will need a ride for the day as I live about 30 miles from the dealer . He told me they didn't have any loaners to give out . I then informed him that the ESP plan should cover any cost for a loaner , he looked down at his computer and looked up at the lady behind him and ask if the F150 was ready LOL. So the ESP help me out for that part .
Would I buy it again , yes . I just got my 2023 Maverick last month that I have waited for for over 13 months and it will have the ESP Premium Care plan as well. For me it is called peace of mind .
Oh, they said there was nothing they could do to fix the problem so I brought it home and fixed it myself lol

I purchased an ExtraCare Ford ESP Warranty for my '23 from Lombard Ford. I paid around $1,700 for 10 yr/125k mi, and I can't remember the deductible, either 50 or 100.

I never bought extended warranty. I have 1 month till the 3 yrs is up & it will be costly. I see a PHEV is in the works for '25 & I'll trade for that. I
think here in Canada we have 3 yrs bumper to bumper & 5 yr powertrain? So, I think I'll skip. Next one, a PHEV, I'll get extended for sure.

Not sure in Canada, but apparently they aren't offering PHEV in US, at least that's what they're saying now. Some chit about the F150 and the Mav will cover the EV offerings. I hope that is not true, and also that we get a supercab PHEV 6G Ranger, else I'll be keeping the ranger or possibly a Mav once my need for a larger truck goes away.

I have 4-5 months on my 3 year warranty, and also have never sprung for any extended warranty on anything, but I may do it under the circumstances. I really like the Ranger, but it would be a large pill to swallow to rebuild a transmission or something later on.

That's terrible. You expect to be scammed by the salesman, but the Service Writer? Something is very wrong here.

The sooner you buy it when you purchase your Ranger, the less expensive the plans are.....waiting till OE warranty is about to expire will cost you much more.
I bought mine within a month of purchasing my Ranger in 2021. 8 year, 100,000 mile, $100 deductible ran me $1195.00 via Flood Ford.
Can't imagine what it would cost now that's it's going on 3 years old.

I guess my question is, how serviceable is this truck by someone who is a familiar with working on old school American V8s and basic cars?

Some of the new tech scares me, and I don’t want to have to “hook up a PC to flash the truck to accept a module” I got from the junkyard 7-8 years down the road.

If complex, I’m leaning towards an ESP plan. Even some Japanese and German vehicles you can’t even do brakes without having some sort of scan tool, it throws a code if you retract the caliper mechanically without prepping the computer.

I'm a "Happy Day's" era guy, grew up with the old stuff...did engines, swaps, carbs, ect ect.
Now, the only things I do are fluid/filter changes on the Ranger and wife's Subi. Aside from simple nut n bolt stuff, I wouldn't attempt to fix/repair the Ranger. or the Subi. They both have more electronics and system sensors than any dozen vehicles we have owned in the past decade.
Thats just me...it all depends on your ability.

In the past, non-Ford extended warranties had the highest consumer complaints on record. Pay up front and when work was needed claim was denied.

Has anyone had experience with after market warranties WRT payouts? Good or bad.

If they work in a dealer they are trying to scam you. I think ford should give us a lifetime power train warranty for free like we got with the new Rav4 Hybrid we just bought.
