Just a humorous tale. We often laugh here about the Taco and it's silly, pathetic, transmission constantly downshifting on the highway. Well, while heading to vacation on Saturday, at one point I was on the interstate passing a Tundra. He was pulling a boat. Boat was nothing major. Probably a 16 footer or so. Had a 150HP on it. Anyway, he was running about 75-ish while I had the cruise on 78. While I slowly moved on past him, I heard his truck hunt gears multiple times. Pretty level interstate. Immature I may be, but the pathetic Toyota performance... or lack of... brought a smile to my lips.

Had the same with a taco a couple of months ago. Wasn't pulling anything. Just lifted with big tires. Constant gear hunting. But, hey. It's a toyota?

Oh what a feeling!

Edit: For the confused younger forum members. It was an ad campaign. Before you were born.

Yeah, and it's the Ranger that have 'defective' transmissions.

ya sorry dont believe you... ive driven the old tundra with the 5.7 v8 and its a very simple and good truck to tow with and it doesnt bounce around in gears... the new ones dont seem to bounce around as much as the tacoma thou... but the 3rd gen tacoma has an easy fix to have it retuned and then its fine..

but should we bring up the trans on this truck isnt great either? we have seen failures and they shift hard and dont shift that great either... so talking about the toyota trans when ours isnt that great either is kinda pointless now lmao

Wow. There goes any hope I had of sleeping tonight.

Note to self. Don't report anything that will throw shade at Rhino's Toyota world views.

People are famously frustrated with the 6-speed auto for excessive gear hunting.
They're great trucks, but it's real.

I'm waiting on the facts on our 10R80. Like percentages of sold vs failure etc.
Its been really hard to find anything detailed enough.
The updated CDF drum linked to failures shows they know the original design was a bit flawed. As far as percentage chance of failure... yeah I can't find anything either.

I do think this forum has shown some link to the number of lights you put on the truck increases the chance of a complete failure before 100k. Using webMD like methods of diagnosing the problem.

At least GM came out and said their version of this trans was doodoo. Now to see if the new one actually fixed anything. Got sort of close to going to a Colorado... but the dealer started adding market adjustments, then they started the update kills the battery thing.... and that same truck I looked at is literally collecting dust at the dealer around the corner.

also Let’s think for a sec here ya? If you are driving next to another truck you are not going to hear it search for gears in your vehicle.. if you were in the truck ya you will
But I’m a different vehicle? Nah

They're great trucks, but it's real.
I’ve driven the older ones not the newest one (with the face only a mother could love lol)never had an issue towing or driving and they didn’t hunt for gears at all now the 3rd gen tacoma yaaa it does it’s pretty annoying as well but sadly it reminds me of how my truck shifts now.. my truck has 19k miles and it searches around goes into a gear that it tbh shouldn’t be in or when I first start it the truck just won’t move and I was told it’s normal by ford…
Not all Tundras are V8’s.
The last generation was commonly sold with the 5.7 v8 now you could option in a smaller v8 I think it was the 4.6 or somethin? Can’t remember but you haven’t been able to get a v6 in them for awhile
Now
The current gen. And out with its twin turbo v6 which a buddy owns and it goes great ugly lookin thing but it does great so far

I am as well but mine is already acting funny at low miles and others have shown issues or the few that have blown up it just makes me wonder

3 of my friends have Tacoma's. Went on a fishing trip and I went with my buddy in his 18 Tacoma pulling a kayak trailer with 3 fishing kayaks. The engine screaming and transmission shifing non stop was driving me nuts!

There have been 365,230 Rangers sold since 2019....this forum probably represents less than 5% of all owners....I'd bet transmission failures on Rangers is less than 2%. Just my guess. I beleive that sometimes we think things are worse because forums is where people come to complain and vent. Just my 2 cents!

Trying to think of how to respond to that. Oh, here it is.... you are wrong. Completely. Or my hearing is better than yours.

It's not difficult at all to hear a neighboring vehicle when it is dropping and searching for gears. Got a Taco near me that I routinely laugh at as it constant downshifts while the driver is trying to be all badass and haul ass. Yes I hear it. And yes it is as we are both driving down a 4 lane highway. To be very, very clear.... yes I hear his truck shift.

But I must be mistaken because you said so.

I'd recommend that you either get yourself some hearing aids or turn your music off. There's a whole world out there that you seem to be missing.

so you are able to hear a completely different vehicle at 70mph shift... either you have you're hearing aids turned to max or you got hearing like a damn superhero because unless it has an exhaust on it you really are not going to hear a vehicle search for gears next to you..
