I drive mostly highway. Never beat on my truck. No jackrabbit starts.
It’s very disappointing to hear about these issues. I also had the leak at the rear axle. I really like the truck, but I may look to replace it with a non-Ford product.

Just an update. Just left the dealer. They think that since I was up to date on my services (majors all done by ford) that I may qualify for up to 3k of the cost but they want to do full diagnostics before they say. Fingers crossed.
Appreciate all the support. Luckily my dad was in Reno and able to tow me home with his Tahoe (which I call a mini van) and a U-Haul. I’m never going to hear the end of this ?‍♂
So, when you had this discussion with the service advisor, had the technician already looked at your truck? Maybe your transmission will have to be replaced, but I find it very unusual that there is major ATF leak. What caused the leak and does the ATF smell burnt? The fluid looks pink, which would signify that it is not burnt. I will be very interesting to see what the technician finds.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Don’t ever tell them you flat towed it. Seems that’s a whole nuther can o worms!
Yep, even though Ford says you can, they might try to say I did it wrong, even though I have flat towed it 10,000 miles without issue. But I do photo & geotag the dash display at both the start and finish to prove it was in tow mode.

This sounds familiar like there is a solution being kept undercover among the dealership service departments. You'd be paying labor and Ford supplying the parts.

As far as our Rangers equipped with the early 10R80 against other Fords/Lincoln's that are more common it's a frequently discussed problem - maybe not in relation to numbers produced to failures reported but enough to dominate forums. All but a portion of the last 5G's likely have the pre-redisgned CDF with the 'walking' seals.

Among transmission shop newsletters and videos the primary component(s) that seem to be the primary point of failure exist in the majority of 5G Rangers so I think it's going to be a suspicion that dogs our particular trucks until they are repaired/rebuilt/replaced.

Wow...So So sorry to hear, this is why I got a 125K warranty. I'm not at all rubbing it in or gloating its just for the cost of a blown tranny these days it just makes sense to buy an extended warranty. I'd rather think I wasted my money on the warranty than to be stuck with a tranny bill. I budget for a car payment and don't keep my vehicles much longer than 100K. Yes I know many cars go 200K or more if you treat them right, I just don't like the idea of traveling to Arizona from California and having a major breakdown in the middle of the desert. I also don't like the idea of an extended warranty, if nothing happens its pure profit! What an age we live in. Hope you don't have a huge bill, most can barely afford living these days.

Wow! 5 pages of doom and gloom and extended warranty sales pitches. The OP has only posted once since the original post. He had "A" hard shift and a check engine light and a fluid leak from who know where. And, he had just had it flushed. The update was just about his conversation with the shop about possibly getting help with the cost of repair. Which there is no information on.

We do not even know if his transmission is wrecked. Maybe the didn't get the dipstick cap on tight and it blew the dipstick out causing the fluid leak and the level got low enough to cause the hard shift and the light.

This transmission thing has got some people on the forum In such a panic that they are ready to dump their trucks and by some other brand.

The class action suites have such outrageous claims of life threatening consequences that the only people that will win will be the lawyers.

I agree the 10R80 has its issues. Could it be better, yes it could. Is it a defective design, I don't think so. I know that doesn't mean much, if anything, to the people that have had failures.

But truth is every complicated mechanisms have failures. Nothing is perfect, and I mean NOTHING, is perfect. We've had many guesses as to how many 10R80s there out in the wild and we have no idea how many have failed. What is the actual failure rate per 100K miles driven? How many failures have we had on Ranger5G out of all the members? Remember, we are a pretty exclusive, and dare I say critical, club. And yes people don't normally post about how great things are going. There were a few threads like that started but they died rather quickly.

I do read the transmission threads with interest and do plan on changing to the finned aluminum pan hoping it will help the life. I'm just waiting on Fitzmotor to get his dipstick done. One thing I have noticed is that most of the posters in these threads are always the same group of members saying pretty much the same things. And another thing most of the YouTube or Internet articles about the issues with 10R80 are aimed at the high performance segment of users who are pushing it to its limits.

I know this forum is starting to wind down as the 6G rolls out. But can we maybe ease up on the bashing and stick to information sharing on how to make our trucks work better and last longer.

I understand the fear of a breakdown, but buying a new car does not mean you are immune to one. I can't tell you how many times I have been a dealerships service department and seen a near new vehicle being towed in on a flatbed. Just a guess, but I do not think they were towing it in for an oil change. From living in Arizona for the past 35 years, I can tell you that you can greatly reduce your chances of a breakdown by keeping up on maintenance on your car. The most critical parts in the heat have been the battery, rubber related (tires, belt, hoses), and the cooling system. To each their own, but after your Ranger is paid off, I would take that car payment amount and start banking it. Use that money for repairs on your Ranger and the next car.

The crap thing about this one is... it is based on a design flaw and not because those who lost a trans didn't keep up on maintenance or drove like idiots. Seems like a roll of the dice if that drum or valve body gives you the finger and causes problems.

GM at least admitted their design sucked and believe they have it right with the new 8L80 in the Colorado this year and Silverado in 24. Going up to 100k on the warranty.

I heard about and or saw a new part number for the 10R80 that could help that is quietly going in 2024 models (?). Just a major PITA to install ahead of time and that will never become a recall.

I looked at trading away from the known issue while have some equity in the Ranger... but it seems everything resonably sized with a bed has some sort of transmission issue lurking. Even the mighty Toyota has haters on their 6 speed for gear hunting. Also the Santa Cruz and that is the least truck like thing out there..... has transmission issues.

I really wish this thing would have had a manual option.... but then it would have probably had a dual mass flywheel that is expensive and breaks alot......... I thought about a Yota with a stick but I feel weird sitting in them driving an automatic.... that would be super awesome with a clutch.

Fix your EGR valve...your trans has 5k left to go...
