New tires installed affecting lane keeping assist

I recently had new tires installed on my 2021 Ranger XLT 4x4. The stock size was 255/65/17 and I went to a 265/65/17. I have noticed that it has affected the lane keeping assist. It doesn’t react as quick as before and doesn’t really force the truck back into its lane as aggressively as with the stock tires. Has anyone experienced this issue after going to a different size tire? If so what can be done to correct the issue. I was told that I would need to change the tire size to my new tire size in the trucks computer system to fix the issue. Any thoughts or anyone that can help resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Many things can affect how your truck will "track"....tire tread patterns, tire width, the tire compound that was used to make the tire, the sidewall size, tire pressure, the road surface make up (what its made of), "Crown" of the road lanes, and combinations of any of the listed items.
I recently went from the OE Bridgestone, 2 ply tires to a slightly larger, but 10 ply Yokohama tires.
The truck's ride and handling changed very noticeably, especially the way it "tracks" on different surfaces. Much stiffer tire, and I am accounting for that....but just the difference in tire construction and width made a noticeable change in the "feel" of the Ranger.
Installing a wider, taller, heavier tire will effect the lane keeping assist......the puter/sensors are telling the truck to "do something" and it will respond, but within the limits of the equipment itself, in this case the tires.
If your totally not happy or comfortable with them, then you just might have to swap em out.

You can change the info about tire size in the puter....others should come in and tell you how it's done.

Your tire size change is pretty minimal.
255/65/17 to 265/65/17 increases the tire diameter by 0.5" and the width by 0.4". Probably a few pounds heavier too. However, both are OEM Ranger sizes (along with 265/60/18).

You can adjust the tire size with Forscan. You can also do it, to a more limited selection, with the Ford Tune tool. Forscan is cheap and probably the way to go. Check out the thread on it.

That said, I find it hard to believe such a small tire size change made a noticeable difference. I run both 265/65/17 and 265/60/18 on my truck and the lane keeping systems doesn't feel different. My tires are closer in size to each other, but vastly different (A/T vs winter tire).

My switch was a bit more drastic. So far the lane keeping has been about the same?

Went from 255/75 to 255/65/17 - 30 to a 32 basically.

Settings are on. That was the first thing I made sure of.
IIRC there are a couple different options for the lane keeping system. Are the settings the same before and after? Is it possible something reset them. I'm not at my truck at the moment, otherwise I'd take a picture of the settings in the menu.

It just seems really odd to me that a 0.5" increase in tire diameter will change anything. Especially when you are still at an OEM tire size.

could be the new tires sort of pull one way or other. maybe the spot where the sensor is, is dirty.

Here are a few questions for you.

First you said new tires. New rims too or factory? And a silly question as they aren't very common but are they directional tires?


Does it feel like a tire may be not balanced correctly? OR maybe there is a tire that required ALOT of balance weight placed on the rim?

Just spit-balling here because I am curious to what the issue is and want to see what the fix is.

Factory rims. They are not directional tires. Feels like they are balanced correctly. I’m not getting any pull of the steering wheel.

Honestly, it’s hard to imagine that minimal of a size increase would make any difference, especially since 265/65/17 is a stock ranger tire size (FX4). I doubt Ford is programming lane assist to the individual truck. Since you only went wider and not taller, you probably can’t make any adjustments with forscan that would make any difference.

FYI, I agree with others that it should be minimal to zero impact: I did not notice any change in lane keeping assist when doing the same 0.5" tire size increase from stock. It still works well for me.
So, also agreed there may be something else wrong.
