Back in 1971 I picked up a Fisher Model 400 in wall unit from the mid 1960's. Wow! What a receiver/amplifier. I still miss it. I ended up trading it for my 57 Chevy Bel Air. I was a High School kid and I wanted both, but I wanted the Chevy more. It had Stereo Beam Tuning! You knew you had the station dialed in when the beams just crossed each other. These units are now valuable collector's items.

I am still enamored with them.

I have some specific training in the radio communications field. The problem is not the radio interfering with the car, it's that the car's high-power electronics produces a lot of electromagnetic interference that AM radios are sensitive to. The car's electronic environment interferes with AM radio reception.
In order to keep a clean electrical environment and ensure a reliable signal, they have to spend more design effort (more money) on adequate EM shielding of the power electronics. So they lose the AM radio, they can go with cheaper filtering and shielding.
Electromagnetic fields real havoc on any type of radio if the field is strong enough. One of the vehicles I drove/operated while in the Army was a M944A1 5 Ton with a truck mounted machine shop. It was powered by a 25Kw PTO driven generator that produced 208V three phase electric. The generator was not shielded at all and I would jam every single military radio in service during the early to mid 90's within 100 feet of me when I engaged the generator. And it didn't matter what frequencies the radios used. I would even jam the radios that used frequency hopping.

We had a battalion XO (executive officer - Major) that no one liked. He would always park his HMMV right next to my machine shop truck while in the field. And each time I would fire up the truck and engage the generator. The Major would get upset and have the commo guys come over to see why his radios didn't work. Of course I would shut the generator off when the commo guys showed up and they would tell the major that there was nothing wrong with his radios. I finally told the commo guys what I was doing after they got called to look at the Major's radios about 5-6 times. The commo guys thought it was hilarious that I was jamming the Major's radios.

So yes I can see the newer vehicles, especially EV's needing to have everything electromagnetically suppressed to keep from interfering with things.

AM radio has a very widespread reception area because of the high transmission towers and low wavelength. Plus it can be a low cost local form of communication uncensored with only FCC rules applied. Not trying to be political here but Rush Limbaugh is accredited to saving AM radio because his local area expanded nationwide. Remember NPR is AM. How will that affect their message? Also many Latino and other language stations are broadcast on AM. AM receivers are the cheapest communication receivers on the planet!!! Ask yourself why they want to get rid of it!!

I’m thinking the aviation warning lights on the towers are too expensive to replace…

IIRC, Am stations were restricted to 50,000 Watts of power in the USA but in Tijuana, there were no such restrictions and XERB blasted out with more power than USA stations meaning "The X" could be heard way North of the Mexican Boarder....

Best,
Phil

sweet marantz! the audio junkies are paying top dollar for the old silver faces and lighted dials. I have the same cd player in one of my systems. it was the budget best performer for its day. lets not mention how long ago that was lol.

Amazing how good the stuff from the 70s and earlier sounded and built to last. I doubt anything currently made will be around in 50 years much less worth repairing.

Sweet tube reciever you have! I have several vintage recievers but none with tubes (yet!)
I do have a bunch of tube guitar amps and will never own a solid state amp.
Rock on?

I'm restoring a Kenwood KR7600 receiver right now. 70s and 80s HiFi scene produced some amazing equipment. The photo attached is not of my unit, but just to give a flavor. It's got that silky smooth flywheel tuning knob, and beautiful lighting. 100 watts per channel. I have a few pairs of speakers to go with it, but all of them need work.

Except 5G doesn't have a CD player? At least I haven't found it...lol

its an option on the list with the B&O stereo. a few aftermarket ones but none id suggest. my compact discs all live in the changer at home and never leave now.
my 2016 mustang gt came with a cd player. I bought a 2019 got in after purchase with my new car driving cd ready... looked. looked. looked more... it finally sunk in no cd player o_O i was ticked. The really annoying place was the center stack still had plenty of room for the cd player but was blank.
