Try driving in tow mode, as I believe that it will not skip gears. It's the first switch I hit after starting the truck.
To save on daycare, get one of these. Just be sure to leave food and water.
Putting a TV in it will keep the little ones busy.

My TH350 in my 65 truck has the fluid routed through the engine radiator to warm it up sooner. Do they do that with the Ranger?
They have done that on many vehicles for many years. It helps heat up the transmission fluid, or provide cooling at higher temps.

If you found yourself here reading this I’ll first start off and say this is a Ford Ranger forum, get your filthy minds out of the gutter. ?

Anyway I posed this question the Phil, so I’ll ask everyone so you can all take turns telling me either how dumb I am (most likely) or you’re gonna blow yourself up if you keep driving (not as likely).

So why when cold do my RPMs rev up much higher (louder as well) than normal when shifting from first to third? I’ve been using the remote start since I got the truck and it’s been very cold. When I dont remote start the first two minutes of shifting when 1st to 3rd, with light to moderate pedal pressure has the truck see 3000 + ish rpm’s. RPMs seem to hang a bit. I wouldn’t say any harsh shifts, maybe some jumpy downshifts and firm up shifts but nothing I’m concerned with. I really noticed this today when hoping back in my truck from a 10-15 minute stop at the gas station. Figured truck was still warmed up since I drove home an hour and this stop was after that. But turned truck on and took off maybe 20-30 seconds later with first revving really high before going to third. No hard shift, firm but felt like I was almost in neutral it even though I had normally pedal pressure. Also much louder but wondering if that may be the cooling fan?”
If you’re still reading this, I sincerely apologize ?. You could be off fishing or something rather than here, listening to my dumb, long drawn out question.

Also, if this is normal why exactly do these trucks do this. I’d like to understand the mechanism of why this happens so I can be slightly less ignorant. My older trucks did this a little bit but not as pronounced as this truck. Larger transmission?Again no lurching, shifts were normal for a “cold truck”.
It is part of the emissions strategy. As someone stated the transmission torque converter doesn’t lock up for a few minutes when cold. This helps heat the catalytic converter quicker for better emissions during the warm up phase. Many makes do the same thing including the sports car manufacturer I retired from. Just drive it and quit worrying about It.

I do like some of the “creative” responses though.

I will take your advice.

Yea, this forum is definitely on a whole another level than most, but I do enjoy it. Where else you I go to get some good laughs and advice at the same time.

if the objective is to warm the tranny up as quickly as possible - routing coolant from the engine prior to the Tsat opening is going facilitate that, plus it may be less expensive method than the heat exchanger mounted on the radiator. I would prefer having it on the radiator as in past vehicles I've used the tranny cooling lines to flush fluid. But I believe more and more vehicles are going to eliminating the radiator heat exchanger.

All you stock folks need to seriously think about a tune.....probably will get rid of all these issues I hear about in here....lol. We don't get that stuff with the upgraded ECU tuning......

I still thing Livernois programming is superior to anything out there (including FORD)....just by listening to all the noise and chatter.....

Yeah the majority of the time in normal my truck shift 1st to 3rd. Once driven a bit and when taking off from a stop the truck doesn’t rev up nearly as high when in 1st. Definitely associated with the first few initial takeoffs but curious why. Very well could be the clutch fan. Seems louder in this scenario.
Hello,
When you say get it tuned, do you mean engine, engine and trans? Or is there a way to tune the transmission?
Thanks

Just like me the Transmission hates being cold. ? But once warm it acts normal again. If you want to see a vast improvement get it tuned. It'll still hate it when cold but greatly improved the shifting and smoothness once warmed up.
. If you want to see a vast improvement get it tuned.???? HUH?? GET WHAT TUNED?

Tom, they are talking about something called an ECU tune. It is a small computer that you plug into your truck and it changes the driving characteristics of your truck by reprogramming the truck's main computer - the ECU. Here are some examples of products you can buy.

(This might be too simple of an explanation but I'm trying to make it un-complicated.)
