I was washing my truck off yesterday after a little day trip to go wheelin' in it, and I noticed this paint damage on the hood:

My inclination is to sand it to bare metal where it's flaking up, clean it up really well, and then cover it with touch-up paint. It wont be the prettiest repair, but I'm hoping it stops any further damage. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Thanks! I ordered the Dr. Colorchip kit. I'm hoping for a better blend into the surrounding surface with it.
I know others here have used it and it seems to blend well. For now it's better than taking it to the shop and having the whole hood redone. ??

What I really want to have done is to get a matte black vinyl hood wrap with graphic done, with a ghosted in topographical image. My fear though is that the brutal Florida sun will cook that vinyl and cause more issues.

With the aluminum hood, resist the urge to sand on it until you have paint ready to put on it. If you are good with an air brush, you can use touch up paint in that and get a really smooth touch up.

To the rescue! ? Seriously it'll help protect it as it has great UV protection.

Yeah, not going to level that area until I'm all ready to apply paint to protect it. Unfortunately, I don't have a paint brush and haven't used one since high school. ? I guess that's a no-go their. My main concern is just getting it protect, keep it from worsening, and hopefully not making it look like crap.

Another option is catch one of the paint touchup businesses that visit car lots to touch up dealer trade ins. Also, many of the paintless dent repair places that have brick and mortar shops also offer paint touch up services.

so it may be my eyes but it does not look like damage. looks more like a spot that had impurities or debris on the surface before the paint was applied. if that is the case it should be on ford to paint

Agree. It looks like the paint flaked off on its own. See if your paint is still on warranty for defects.

Just get an all in one touch up pen. It has a little eraser type sanding bit on one end, and then generally a combo color / clear application end. Only your own personal OCD will see it.

Just to add, I bought one for my white explorer for work. Totally different white than my ranger, but I've used it on my ranger. I forget the spots even exist unless I am working on something on the truck and happen to be near one of them. Yea if I focus in on it I can tell its two different shades, but outside of that, out of sight out of mind.

Boca sun is no joke. Although during my first summer after moving from down there to NC, a large section of my dashboard near the windshield in my Ford Fusion melted and warped from a record heat day in the summer. Florida definitely feels hotter and more humid most of the year, but that event made me question which had worse sun/heat at the top end of the spectrum. I had the Fusion in south Florida outside for 3 years and the dash was fine!
