Yeah I’m almost wondering if a good third party tune (other than voiding some warranty) would make the transmission last a bit longer.
We, as in ranger owners, don't even know what the average lifespan of these transmissions in our trucks is yet... your getting way ahead of yourself with wondering what a different tune would do for things. Give it a few more years so there's a meaningful amount of trucks closing in on 200k and/or a meaningful amount blowing trannys before you start all the wonderin.

Wait….who here is blowin’ trannies? What website am I on?
Yeah I plan on riding this truck like all my others, only difference is how this transmission behaves compared to all the other trucks I have had. This one keeps me on my toes, that’s for sure. My main goal with this truck is to pass it on to my kid in 8 years and by that time it’ll have 160-170k miles on it, so I definitely want it to last. Never owned Ford before so this is my shot with them. My Silverado and previous Tacomas were very reliable and I never found myself inside a dealership with any of them. I had originally bought my last Tacoma a few months ago and ended up trading it in. The wind noise in the cab was horrendous and that was with the dealer trying to fix it saying it’s normal. Sounded like a window was cracked all the time and definitely wasn’t normal. Got so bad I couldn’t stand it (tried everything to fix it) so I figured Ranger it was. The dealership also gave me a few grand more than I paid so I figured it was worth it. This Ranger definitely takes a bit to get used to coming from older trucks and I’m hoping my kid will be able to enjoy it for his first truck. If it lasts, he will have a really cool truck for his first.

Nail, hit head. This drives so different than the Nissan 7 speed, Chevy 6 speed, and other light truck transmissions that makes me wonder if the operation is normal. I’m told that it is, but I can get slip going 10-15mph pulling onto a 35mph road while accelerating which feels like the truck lost power, RPMs go up but speed doesn’t, then it finally catches with a “jerky” sensation. No other truck I’ve driven does this. It doesn’t matter if you are gentle or heavy on the throttle, the thing has a mind of its own!

If I drive this thing back to back with another vehicle it’s like night and day even passengers have asked “what’s that lurch” when going uphill with cruise on. It’s definitely something that you notice when it gets caught in between gears.

If this were a manual it felt like you’re still riding the clutch while accelerating then boom, drop the clutch the last 30% and it jerks forward. Doesn’t do it all the time, but when it does it shakes the truck.

So here's the math break down...the cost of a brand new 10R80 with 3 year unlimited mile warranty is $3,000...$2,700 additional for labor/fluids/programming....anyone know what the hourly rate for dealership these days? How many hours would that be?

This is not normal...have it looked into or be prepared for a replacement like I had to...

As I've mentioned, prior to 95K miles, mine was extremely smooth shifting...what you're describing is a failing transmission...my new replacement is like before...butter smooth...

Not sure what current shop rates are where you are, but your probably looking 20 to 24 hours. Maybe less.

My main quirk is the gear being too high and rpm’s dropping to 1100 or so causing a rumble strip sensation until I give it gas. I do notice some jumpier downshifting when slowing down (40 and under). I did unhook the battery which reset something because my transmission really felt much better but over the last week has been more or less back to how it was I’m still very low mileage so I’m hoping that time will smooth things out. You could also look at replacing the egr sensor which from reading on here has helped a ton of people with transmission bucking. Would be nice to rule that off the list. I’m not sure if ford has a programming update for the transmission. Some have also said that there’s smoother out after 15-20k on the truck so who knows. I will be the first to admit I am pretty ignorant when it comes to things like this.

Glad they got it done for you. Now your next step needs to be 200k and beyond. I’m sure you’ll get there. Many more adventures with the truck.

I don't get this "training period" stuff...my original transmission ran perfectly from day one till 95K...the new replacement runs perfectly when I picked my truck up today...zero adaptive learning period that I'm aware of...

It might when you get a little more seat time in it. You're probably just so glad it ran smooth and didn't noting any weird shifting just yet. Now tomorrow you need to go on one of your 2 hour lunch runs. That'll be the tell tail sign. ?

I will say mine is very smooth as far as shifting goes other than some occasional jerkiness downshifting. Nothing major. Most of the time I can’t feel any shifts other than on hills where my gears are too high. I’ve told my transmission that 7th gear at 25 mph is way to high but it never listens…at least until I give it good throttle. Again I’m also only at 3300 miles and have never driven a 10 speed so I’m probably just out of touch with the times. I’d classify my transmission as dumb but very smooth lol. Guessing opposites attract which is why I ended up with the Ranger ?

Sounds like you're driving in D mode...try S or D + tow...or lock out higher gears that you don't want to be in...
