now and then in the off road section questions come up about what gear to take off road, what is the basic recovery gear one must have. i always had a fire extinguisher in my trucks since i was 20 something. i worked on a ranch and grass fires were a big concern. last weekend i went up to oklahoma and did some exploring on back roads and no roads. got to one area around love county where the forest fires were not totally out. they were contained but the wind was working hard to change that. the ok fs fire groups were out. talked to a couple, nice guys. they were going around in the brush trucks trying to make sure nothing spread or got worse. lots of glowing smoldering spots all around. few miles later i came upon a fire going that had plenty of fuel around it and getting wind. i decided i better hose it before it was the next wild fire. i got my lil extinguisher (brand new full) and walked up on it carefully as most of the ground around it was embers from the fires days prior. melted my boots a bit lol. it was not a big flame about what a comfy camp fire would be. the one camp fire size fire took the entire canister to kill it. so long story for recommending two things to everyone
1. keep a fire extinguisher in your truck
2. get a bigger fire extinguisher than you think you need. i will be upgrading mine this week to a much larger canister.

Hi Mark,

I can confirm in several instances where the little fire extinguisher was useless. A Econoline prototype burned to the ground on Loveland pass due to static electricity igniting the gas filler cap which was loose to diagnose the 460 engine vapor locking...Pffffffffffffffffft. no effect on extinguishing the fire. I tried to put out an engine fire on a Chevy Caprice on the side of the road. Fail. Post race in the inspection area, an MGB engine fire. Several little extinguishers later...MGB was no more. We still install these on the passenger side next to the front seat... Pretty much useless.

As a Senior SCCA corner worker I have been to two Fire Schools. I also received fire school as an Indy Car Official. In most cases the little extinguisher is ineffective. Should be dedicated to the kitchen near the stove...

Anyway that is my take... I carry a 5lb extinguisher in our RV.

Best,
Phil

I carry a 5lb in the bed of the truck. I’m no firefighter and I’ve got no plans to deploy this with any hope of saving property - this is how the untrained get themselves into trouble.
This is just there to provide some means of escape should that be necessary.

Figured this might be a good spot to ask, how are people mounting extinguishers? I have the Molle system in the bed and could always go that route but there are also rotopax back there so kind of a catch 22. I like the idea of having one but would prefer a 5lb in the cab.

I have a 5lb on the wall and a 2lb under the sink at my cottage on PEI - every wall, ceiling and door is knotty pine - even with those, if anything starts, the place is a goner…

I have a 5lb I kept handy when sweating copper pipes but since PEX came along, it’s been sitting in a tote in the garage. I should really get it inspected/charged and mount it in my truck or maybe even somewhere in the garage.

i always put mine behind the drivers seat. that way its easy to get to for me. im sure a rig exists for it to be better but mine is just zipped tied where the canister cant get loose but all i have to do is pull the bottle.

The Bracketeer Car Fire... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015G3QXMY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I have this one mounted up front under the passenger seat. It's a perfect fit and totally out of the way. Only mod was I had to drill through some plastic that's under the seat, but you can't see that at all.

I understand a little extinguisher may not do much in case of a serious fire, but it's a requirement for a lot of the off road events I participate in and this is a nice solution.

Small can handle a fire early in the process, but after it is fully involved you need a fire truck. I put out a Mustang engine fire with a small extinguisher during that early window of opportunity, so they are worth having.

Yep that's what I was thinking/hoping for, good to have just in case. If things go south at least it wasn't due to a lack of preparedness.

Hi Folks,

I think I have mentioned this before, we do not use the F word. (Fire) We use the terms "Thermal Event"....The Ford Lawyers have thus spoken...

best,
Phil

I have 2. One is wedged in between the rear seat and the cab. The other is zip tied to my builtright industries storage rack in the bed. When your away from civilization using old equipment and doing other various out in the woods activities things happen and your on your own. I also keep 2 on my boat. When your near shore or fishing in tidal creeks of the ICW same deal. Your on your own lol.
