The biggest issue with the small tank is when your towing. Even a medium size travel trailer will have your mileage. It will cut your range down to 150 miles. There are places you don't pass a station!
I bet towing would make it a bit rougher. Guess a couple 5 gal cans in the back would help. I haven’t had to use one on this truck yet but I’m guessing that what that white nozzle they gave us is for.

I'm with you and use a 5-gallon can, but even 5 gallons isn't that much extra. This one has a one-inch hose and I probably should have gotten the 5/8" they make to possibly use directly with our capless system.

I’ll check that out. I have the white nozzle that came with the truck. Haven’t used it yet but wondering if it’s a pain in the ass to use. If this works with the capless design then I may pick one up.

Yeah, we go back & forth re another tank on the truck. We're already up against GVWR with a front bumper/winch, sliders and a bit of under armor, so we're limited in what we can carry in the bed at this point.

We get anywhere from 8mpg (steep off-road) to 14mpg (45-50 mph on Baja roads) when towing and off-road, averaging around 11 just towing on super slabs at 55mph.

Luckily, the trailer is over spec'd on trailer and GCWR weights, so we can safely carry two 5 gallon cans on the back. This lightens the hitch a bit, which is good in this case, as the handling actually gets a bit better with another 100 lbs on the back.

Being old fogies helps here, as we can't really go for more than a few hours without getting out to stretch and use the facilities. So, stopping to refill at a pump or from the cans works out just fine in most cases. That having been said, range anxiety is always present when we go off-road, as even getting to the air-down point usually means we're already many miles from a fuel station.

We'll be heading to Toktoyaktuk this Summer, and I'll have to do a bit of math as we get closer on carrying another 5 to 10 gallons of petrol for that leg. It will all depend on if enough stations are reliably open. Here's a pic from last Fall in Ranier NP.

I think the gas station pump hose nozzle size is 0.85" inches, so my one inch won't fit. The 5/8" "should".

I save fuel additive bottles and cut the bottom off to make "throw away" filler nozzles.

Too funny!!!
As we speak, I'm sitting outside the supermarket waiting for my wife who just ran in for eggs and "plant based" meat.
In all fairness.... I really like the stuff.

Agree. Took a cross country trip a few months ago and there were points where it was 300 miles to the next station. If I did a cross country trip in this truck I might consider throwing a decent sized gas can in the bed just for the oh shit moments.
Any time I take a off road trip (and sometimes on road) I carry 2 5 Gal poly cans strapped to the headboard. I have run out of gas once, never again if I can help it, what a PIA!

We must have missed a station early on I’m thinking. I tried looking it up and found some people showing some 160 miles stretches in Nevada. Anyway next time I’ll bring a spare gas can for when I miss a stop lol.
That would be hwy 50 from Ely, NV, I had to carry extra gas on my M/C to make the stationless 180 stretch.

I forget the brand, but I tried some plant-based breakfast sausage and it was pretty good. If I remember right, I didn't get more because of high sodium and higher carbs that Lil Smokies (as a diabetic, I try to keep those down, plus I simply love Lil Smokies!).

When towing, if I go out west or into northern Canada, I keep a 5 gallon can full in the bed. Otherwise, I’m fine. I do wish I had more range. I do find the filling funnel a pain with the newer style gas cans.

i keep a long haul 9 gallon ish - 30 litre tank in my 5g. its helped me out at least two times. they are a little known brand but a good product. similar to the rotopax but half the cost. basically a Taiwan copy of the flashy brands. got it for 60 bucks. comes with spout and good rubber seals and a vent. most importantly no california approved pain in the ass nozzle. i know yall know the nozzles i speak of. long haul makes several sizes. in red yellow for diesel and black white green for water or whatever. the nice thing is they are thin. fits in the 5g bed easily.
