I agree you should hold to what you want to pay. Start lower than your goal by starting high on what you want for the trade. When the come back with the counter if it's not right stand up to leave and say let me think about it. Their response will tell you how serious they are to sell. In the market in your area they need to know you are willing to walk away.

I hope for all of our sakes you end up paying under as much or MORE than I paid over. ($1500)
I'll rub some salt in there for you.... I paid almost $9000 off msrp in april 2020 plus 0% interest for 84 months

edit: and I also have all the deleted stuff

Last car I bought i did via text message using Google voice. Save me driving around until I got the price I wanted. It also prevented them from calling me. I like the text message because I could move things at the pace I wanted and do research where needed. I also had documentation of any agreement.

One before that was my ranger. I found 3 dealers with what I wanted, emailed all three and said here's what I'll pay after trade and here's what I'm trading. First to respond gets my business. Of course that was before the covid craziness.

Both were way easier deals in less time and for better prices than when I've actually gone to the dealer to negotiate.

So the question is - do you need a 4x4 truck? It’s a bit of a gamble no doubt as to whether your escape is going to last till your maverick shows up but it sound like you chose a maverick in the first place because:
1) you wanted a hybrid - for the better mileage then an full ICE engine has to offer
2) you didn’t need 4x4 (cause you were going for the hybrid)
3) you wanted something smaller than any current truck in the market
4) comfort and drivability like a car - re: unibody construction

All of the above is not the ranger. So do you want what you want or compromise cause you want to hedge your bets and buy the ranger thinking that the escape is going to die before you get the maverick?

We can’t help you make that choice. Up to you. I hope you are happy with whatever you choose. The ranger is a fine truck and we all love it. And everyone here is helpful if you need help if you do choose a ranger. Oh and you need a tailgate damper if you buy a ranger.cause that’s what Dave says. Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.

Good luck.

Do I need 4x4? No. Do I want it because capitalism? Yes. Comfort and drivability aren't my #1 concerns either.

My wife and I have had a bit of a saga with Ford. We were day 2 reservation holders for a Bronco and had an order on the books for nearly 2 years that was never built. It was going to replace a 2004 Expedition with 250k miles on it. Eventually we reached a point where we needed a newer reliable car so we had to cancel our Bronco order and buy the Explorer. Luckily the delay in the Bronco allowed us to save up a lot and we were able to buy the Explorer with only a small loan. I then sold my 2012 Mustang GT to Carvana for $22k (stupid, no wonder that company is going under) to fund a new car for myself (the Mustang needed work).

Originally I hadn't been paying attention when the Maverick launched because I was absorbed in the Bronco world. I've wanted a Ranger/Tacoma for years, and when the Maverick grabbed my attention what really got me was the cheap price, and the fact that it was a fuel sipping hybrid was an additional bonus. Unfortunately when I got really interested, to order banks weren't yet open for MY23. The big catch is Ford can't build them at nearly the capacity that people want them. There are stories on the Maverick forums of people waiting 1.5 years to get a truck (not much different than our Bronco story). I am lucky in the sense that I'm front of the line with a PC10 from my dealer for the Maverick, but there's still an excellent chance it'll never be built.

I also work predominantly from home so gas prices aren't THAT big of a concern. Who knows, if I buy today I may keep the Maverick order and trade the Ranger in on it if I want. Long story short, if this dealer today isn't willing to work with me I'll walk, keep the Maverick order, and keep an eye out for a nice Ranger. Man I do love that cactus gray though....

It sounds like you have a solid plan except for:
1. how will the used car market be when you trade in the ranger?
2. will you want to trade in the ranger?

#2 isn't that big of a concern just something to ponder. if you need a new car now then you need a new car now and seems like you found something that you like.

This is how I got $3k off my '21 in May of last year:
When I saw the truck on the lot, I called the dealer for info. He e-mailed me a copy of the sticker.
Next day I called and said I would come take a look. He went over the features, and I took it for a test drive. I told him give me a day or two to think about it. Three days later, he called me to ask if I was still interested, and I said not for $33K on an STX SE 2WD, and that I wanted to save up a couple thousand for a bigger down payment. Later that day, he called me again to ask, 'What would it take to get me to buy'. I said, I'd be happy at $30, IF they add the level kit. He talked it over with the manager who said he would let it go for $30,250, and I said deal, I'll be there.
FYI, the truck was on the lot for a total of 4 days, and it was the only Ranger in 50-mile area.

Now I know things are different now. But go in with the attitude that you would like to buy a truck, not necessarily a Ford truck and not that you need to buy a truck. Dealers are like sharks; they can smell fear and desperation. Don't let them use your emotions against you.

Reporting back. I went and test drove the Ranger and I really liked it. The MSRP is 39.5k and I got them down to 37.5k. I'm still really considering it.

Then I had the brilliant idea of going and test driving two Mavericks. A dealer nearby had two used ones. They had a '22 XLT EcoBoost AWD with 3k miles on it and an original MSRP of $29.4k listed for $37k. I really liked it and managed to talk them down to $32.9k; they showed me their invoice and they paid $32.3k for it to some flipper. So now I'm also seriously considering that, thought I hate the idea of paying markup. I also drove a Lariat Hybrid and wasn't as impressed with the hybrid drivetrain.

All in all I'd consider it a successful day. If only I had the cash for both...

Do you need the additional truck capability that the Ranger provides?

Do you prefer trucklike or carlike?

For a bit I seriously considered selling my Ranger (for a nice profit) and getting a Maverick, but in the end I preferred the Ranger.

While I also really like the Maverick, and the current market for them is smoking hot, that market will eventually stabilize and prices will come back to reality. Especially when all the other manufacturers get their Maverick clones onto the market.

I personally will never pay over MSRP for a vehicle as there's already plenty of profit built into the MSRP.

Good Luck and I hope you get the deal you're looking for.

I'm seeing quite a few '23's starting to show up on dealer lots near me, so they'll probably be motivated to move a '22. That being said, I wouldn't say the car market is starting to "crash", so I doubt you'll see it drop too much....maybe $38.5K or $38K. Make an offer (before the end of this month) and go from there.
Looks like that dealer has 3 `23s in inventory (including an Eruption Green Metallic one), not sure if all on the lot yet.

--edit: looks like that Green is still in "Ordered" status, but the other 2 `23s show "In Stock".

Ford Rangers are still few and far between here, but F150's are stacking up. In my area, there isn't a huge demand for $63k XLT F150's.

Which dealer is it? I'm in Virginia like the OP, so I'm curious.

My advice.....you have a pretty strict budget.....don't waste it on thin air (ADM).
