Hello all, I am interested in adding push to start to my 2020 ford ranger xlt. I was thinking one possibility would be to have a key blank in the ignition 24/7. Now I understand this would impose a security risk but if I were to have this key always in code I just term the dummy key with the fob in my pocket. I know this is how many old Volvos work.

Actually that Volvo one will work. Just put it in the ignition lock (if it doesn't quite fit, just push harder) and your key that's in your pocket will work to start your car. The first time you use it you might have to use Alexa but only until she recognizes you. In a firm voice say "Alexa, start my car!" Since it's a Volvo dongle you might have to say it in Swedish but it's still not a big deal. Again, firm but NOT angry voice, "Alexa, starta min bil!"

Easy peasy

Thanks for being so helpful, I was using the Volvo key as reference, the key that would be in the ignition of the ranger would be a cut test key.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Not sure why you would want to do that, and even if it would work you still don't have 'push' to start as the ignition still has to turn. I prefer a physical key, less to go wrong.

This.

I love intelligent access and push button start.

I wouldn't buy a new vehicle without it.

But there's no way I'd try to retrofit it. It's useless without intelligent access anyways.

D fresh, all the the cars my family has are intelligent access and push button start. It makes life so easy. I am trying to find a dealer that would swap my door handles for the intelligent access ones and then code it to work. I don’t like non oem either so I was trying to figure out a way to do the “push button start” simpler.

Wasn't there somebody who tried it 2 years ago and found it was VERY cost prohibitive? might as well build a new truck the way you want and save money. then you can have 2 rangers

Even worse, you want a dealer to do this? The difference between an XLT and a Lariat is $4k. Even if it can be done you'll spend at least that much doing so.

You bought the wrong truck.

Not sure if it's been tried but you're 100% correct.

100% why I bought the Lariat vs. the XLT. Push button start. While I like some of the other Lariat features, I could live without them. But live without pbs? NOPE. For me, pbs is that important. Everybody has an opinion, but in my world if I'm paying for a vehicle it WILL have pbs. I absolutely love that feature. Love it. Even if I found vehicle that was an extremely good deal, if it didn't have pbs it wouldn't even be on my radar. Guess you could say I'm a pbs addict!

Humans are getting way TF too soft.
I assume the old explorers of the western USA said the same thing when the first railroad went across the country.
IMO, it is not about being soft, it is about wanting the latest and greatest technology

I'm an addict too! The first time I used pbs was on a rental car and it was hard to get use to not always digging out my keys. I'd get in with the key out and then have to get out to put it away. My Tacoma had it and I got so use to it that when I was looking for my Ranger I knew I had to have it too. Now it's the opposite, when I rent a car that doesn't have it I'll sit down then have to get back out to dig out the key. First world problems! lol
