Hi All - I tried searching the forum to see if the ticking/sewing machine sound my truck is making is one of the normal sounds for this engine. I couldn’t find one. So is the sound on this video “normal”. I have 350 miles. Any feedback is appreciated!

Hi clint, welcome to r5g! I also have a similar sound that worried me a bit at first. I think its a pretty normal characteristic of this version of the engine. I hear it much more with the hood up. my guess is it has to do with the direct injection stuffs. Ive noticed mine makes more noise when cold. After driving a while it seems more mild. Id say if it runs good and the oil looks good on the stick and at the oil change then no worries let her rip.

Thank you. I only have 350 miles on it and live in FL so warm to start. Pretty loud even after warming up and can definitely hear it when driving down the road with my windows down (not when windows up). I tried finding the engine cover per recommendations from folks on other threads but Ford no longer makes them. I figured it’s the normal noise everyone has talked about on here but wanted to make sure.

id bet its just the normal noise. mine sorta sounds like a sewing machine lol. one sign to look out for is if it gets louder or changes to a more concerning sound. otherwise just enjoy the truck:like:

I have the ticking also which is mildly annoying at times. Adding an engine cover helped but didn't completely eliminate it. The engine bay looks much better though and frankly looks unfinished without it. If you Google the item, you should find a few dealers selling them online, also eBay.

This is a video of mine with about 300 miles on it. I had the same concern. It's now at 17,000 miles. Never had any issues.

It is normal injector noise. If you've ever been around a set of injectors that are being tested you will be amazed at how loud they can be. Direct injectors are an order louder. Plus the High-Pressure pump makes its own noise, which is why they wrap it in foam.

The Ranger injectors are loud enough to hear that when you're at fairly slow speeds and you lift off the throttle completely, you can hear the ECU stop commanding them to fire.

Roll about 30mph with the windows up and lift off, you'll be able to hear it.

Mine sounds like a diesel engine when the hood is up but don't really notice it with the hood down , especially after it idles down after cranking. I have a Lariat with the hood insulation but not sure if all trims come with that . I could see it being annoying without it and the metal of the hood becoming a sounding board .

It's still annoying if I take a drive through with the windows down though :(

Yup. Same sound. Thanks for sharing and noting that you’re good to go still at 17k miles!

Thanks all. From the research I did on this forum I was thinking it was “normal”. Appreciate you all confirming that!

Mine sounds like that too, especially on cold starts. Wish my engine bay was as clean as yours lol..

Yeah, normal. it's the high-pressure fuel pump.
and as for engine covers mentioned, it's a discontinued item, nobody has them. They used to go for about $60, if you get lucky and find one on e-bay, it will be about $300.

Same noise on mine. Don't feel bad about the engine cover, I didn't find it made any noticeable difference for me.

I think it does make a difference once a couple of mouse families move in! =p

Thanks. Yeah, can't find one anywhere. Between being discontinued and I found the guys with new broncos were buying them too because they fit their engines as well, I think they're all gone.
