Stumbled upon this thread after having an issue following a swap back to my summer wheels with genuine Ford TPMS sensors. They worked fine last year (bought new from dealer for my aftermarket wheels). I then ran aftermarket winter wheels that came with "programmed" aftermarket sensors that my truck picked up fine after mounting those wheels, but now that I'm back to my summer wheels with Ford sensors it's not reading any of them ?‍♂ The weird part is it did read them for the first drive, now shows a dashed line at all 4 corners and the TPMS malfunction light. Anyone have a similar experience and if so how did you remedy it?

You probably need to perform the Tire Pressure Monitoring System Reset Procedure as listed in your owner's manual in the Wheels and Tires section.

I actually couldn't find it in the owner's manual. It just says to bring it to a dealer for service if the monitoring system is behaving like mine is. But the procedure is posted by several Ford dealership websites. I guess I'll give it a try.

I'm think reprogramming is the root of the problem.

I've never re-programmed on this or my F150 and do all my own rotation/seasonal swaps. Every time the truck re-learns the new wheels on the first drive over 20 miles.

My f150 I had 5 matching tire/wheels and carried the 5th in the box. I'd do rotation using the 5th, and then carry the wheel that came off in the box, and it still re-learned on it's own, with no issue.

I know that's not helpful to the OP, but just sharing my thoughts. Don't let the shop re-program until after you allow it a chance to do it on it's own.
SONOFA!!!

My F150 I had 5 tires mounted with TPMS, and did 5 wheel rotations, with the spare carried in the box, so always on the truck. 5,000km roatations over 130,000 km, every time they synced on the first drive afterward.

This Ranger I have 6 summer and 4 winter tires all mounted with TPMS. I have done 7 rotations and had the winters on from Dec to April, again, every time the new sensors pick up on the first drive above 20 miles.

Yesterday, I did a rotation, and twenty miles into the first drive last night I get an error message, TPMS not working. The display shows 42 & 41 for the front tires, and hash marks for the rears. The rears which now show as not working, were rotated from the front so they were working the day before. The now fronts were both spares sitting in the garage, both were working in April when I took them off. These are all Ford OEM TPMS.

Today I got in the truck, error message is gone. WooHoo!!! Twenty miles into the drive, error message is back and again, it's not registering the rears, d'oh.

Ten years and at least 35 rotations, this is the first time it's ever happened to me. I'm going to do the reset tomorrow, nut I'm not happy about it ;)

I tried the manual reset a few times, but I kept getting the double honk on the first tire. I swapped out the only tire that had individual service since the TPMS were installed and the system came back to working properly.

I dropped it off at Blue Start Ford for a TPMS check/service and they replaced the sensor under warranty. It's back on the truck now and working perfectly again. Woo Hoo!

I buy the Autel sensors off ebay and program the sensors with and Autel programmer. I read my Ranger sensors and programed the Autels with the identical codes. Don't have any issues with my Ford or the Subaru I had doing this procedure.

I program the new Autel sensors before they are installed in the new wheel and tire combo's and then bring them to the tire place to be mounted. For the Ranger I picked up 4 rims and I installed/ torqued the sensors before the tire place mounted the tires.

I just got my winter tires mounted on my stock rims today and I did this exact thing, worked flawlessly. I did borrow my buddies Autel programmer to make it happen but it’s so easy and seamless I’ll likely buy my own programmer so I can do this in the future on mine and my kids vehicles when necessary.

Page 302, 303 and 304 of Owners Manual

Note:
You need to perform the tire pressure monitoring system reset procedure after each tire rotation.
To provide the vehicle's load carrying capability, some vehicles require different recommended tire pressures in the front tires as compared to the rear tires. The tire pressure monitoring system equipped on these vehicles is designed to illuminate the low tire pressure warning light at two different pressures; one for the front tires and one for the rear tires.
Since tires need to be rotated to provide consistent performance and maximum tire life, the tire pressure monitoring system needs to know when the tires are rotated to determine which set of tires are on the front and which are on the rear. With this information, the system can detect and properly warn of low tire pressures.

Performing the System Reset Procedure Read the entire procedure before attempting.
  1. Drive the vehicle above 20 mph (32 km/h) for at least two minutes, then park in a safe location where you can easily get to all four tires and have access to an air pump.
  2. Place the ignition in the off position and keep the key in the ignition.
  3. Cycle the ignition to the on position with the engine off.
  4. Turn the hazard flashers on then off three times. You must accomplish this within 10 seconds. If you successfully enter the reset mode, the horn sounds once, the system indicator flashes and a message shows in the information display. If this does not occur, please try again starting at step 2. If after repeated attempts to enter the reset mode, the horn does not sound, the system indicator does not flash and no message shows in the information display, seek service from your authorized dealer.
  5. Train the tire pressure monitoring system sensors in the tires using the following system reset sequence starting with the left front tire in the following clockwise order: Left front - driver side front tire, Right front - passenger side front tire, Right rear - passenger side rear tire, Left rear - driver side rear tire.
  6. Remove the valve cap from the valve stem on the left front tire. Decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds. Note: The single horn tone confirms that the sensor identification code has been learned by the module for this position. If a double horn is heard, the reset procedure was unsuccessful, and you must repeat it.
  7. Remove the valve cap from the valve stem on the right front tire. Decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds.
  8. Remove the valve cap from the valve stem on the right rear tire. Decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds.
  9. Remove the valve cap from the valve stem on the left rear tire. Decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds. Training is complete after the horn sounds for the last tire trained, driver side rear tire, the system indicator stops flashing, and a message shows in the information display.
  10. Turn the ignition off. If two short horn beeps are heard, the reset procedure was unsuccessful and you must repeat it. If after repeating the procedure and two short beeps are heard when the ignition is turned to off, seek assistance from your authorized dealer.
  11. Set all four tires to the recommended air pressure as indicated on the Safety Compliance Certification Label, affixed to either the door hinge pillar, door-latch post, or the door edge that meets the door-latch post, next to the driver seating position or Tire Label located on the B-Pillar or the edge of the driver door.
