Ford should be embarrassed if they are still delivering MY 22 with a shudder and an active TSB out there for the earlier years of production
Pretty sure they got it sorted. 21 model I got is pretty smooth 1-10

Hi NB,

just a bit of a personal back story. My parents did not pay for my undergrad degree. I had to work my way through college. How?....I was a automobile mechanic and worked in an independent VW garage. I worked about 4 hours an evening and 10 to 12 hours on Saturday. I did it all...pull the engine...tear it down, finish assembly of what the owner and his son did not get done...reinstall and get it running. rebuild the transmissions...my speciality... My homework had grease stains on it from time to time and I always had grease under the fingernails. When I came to Ford and got tool boxes full of tools, I kept a tool kit in my desk and my fellow engineers would find me in the lot working on prototypes....They asked me why I didn't take it to the X garage and let the mechanics work on the prototype...I said that I was quicker than the process of getting the X garage to work on relative simple things like changing out an alternator... Take the vehicle over to the mechanics lot in the middle of the test track....wait for the shuttle back to the X garage. Go to the Light Truck Desk, write a PCN (Parts Change Notice...fill out with old and new part numbers of the experimental parts) Throw the PCN in the incoming bin...wait for the shutttle back to the Office. Time to go home. Then wait for the phone call that the mechanic had made the change. Then wait for the shuttle back to the X Garage to pick up the keys. The wait for the shuttle to the Mechanics lot, get off the shuttle and search for the vehicle and drive it back to the office....two to three days to get what I could do in 30 minutes...

I have the upmost respect for true mechanics...it is a hard and honest job... I are one still.

Arrrrg...long post again...Sheesh...

Best,
Phil

Hey all - didn't see this in the overall list of known issues.

Quite often, my truck will shift at very...weird points when going slow. For example today, I was in S coming home. Drove into my drive way and slowed down (only going 5mph or less here) and it shifted into 1st, it felt like. But it's very jerky and clunky.

This happens often when I'm slowing to a stop. There are also times when it's warming up that it'll shift up and down oddly, in general, when moving at slower speeds. I keep it in 2H at pretty much all times for normal driving, and I go between D and S depending on the situation.

Anyone else experiencing this? I had heard the 10-speeds were rock solid and one of the best transmissions in use right now. So far, that has NOT been my experience and it's beginning to really bug me after 5k miles.

Looks like I'll just have to get a tune. Which means more mods for the car. Darn.

I read another 6+ threads on the topic. Seems I have the intro to the 10-speed situation, along with some potential drivetrain fun. I'll get the usuals checked out and make sure it's all good.

Sorry for the dumb thread.

Many of us were thinking the same thing when we got ours. It’s adaptive and over time it does learn your driving style. (Shift points) For me I leave it in drive 90% of the time. Lockout gears I don’t want it going into and down shift when necessary. There will be a delay in the transmission reacting to your command. I can still slam gears if I get impatient

In reality it’s going to be a learned driving style like nothing you have ever experienced before. Once you do get the hang of it, well let the games begin!

Oh! One more tip. If in sport mode and you hold the shift button for like 3 seconds in any direction it will auto shift like it was in drive. Like I said, a learning experience

As I posted in the other active thread on this issue, dealer confirmed it as a TSB issue, so Ranger Pride's post is not far off. Now to see if the fix works.

Hi OP,

Here's the good news/bad news from my experience.

Same exact symptoms. Ended up having the TSB performed, and was told my original driveline angle was like 7.2* and after the TSB its at 5.9*

The truck drives better and no longer shutters from a stop.

HOWEVER, I also was experiencing the "pulsing feeling" which yes I'd describe as a resistant CV joint, or almost like a very subtle clutch slip. That has persisted. I think that the above issue amplifies it, but the shims didn't eliminate this problem in my truck entirely.

I'll be bringing it back in a few weeks to try again and have them align my hood properly, as one corner is just about knocking the headlight lens on the corner.

I love the truck so I have been finding this experience disappointing, but so far everything has been free to fix, so I can't really complain too much. Just wish this had been taken care of before I put 5k miles on it lol.

Hi Can,

What you are describing is called Start up shudder and is associated with two piece drivelines like the Ranger has. There is a TSB out that outlines for the dealer how to shim the rear axle pinion to hopefully improve the shudder. Dealer should be able to find the TSB...I will see if I can locate the number and edit this post...

okay...found it...
TSB 20-2277

Best,
Phil
Hi Phil. I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 21 Ranger Lariat Super Crew FX4 and have the same low speed shudder. I've taken it to my dealer, discussed the issue with them along with the TSB. TSB was performed with no improvement. Driveshaft assembly was replaced and made the issue worse so the original driveshaft assembly was reinstalled. Attached are the notes from the tech.

Where do I go from here? I don't think a brand new truck should have this issue with no know solution. I would seem that there is an issue with the fabrication of the driveshaft assembly by Spicer. I'm a sales guy and drive my truck about 700 miles per week. It has always had a mild to moderate vibration in the rear around 75-80 mph. I'm going to contact ford customer service about this but doubt that it will do any good. Any input form anyone will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robbie,

Unfortunately the TSB shimming is not a 100% guarantee fix. Some trucks do not respond. That said. I have determined that some Techs actually installed the shims backward as they did not recheck the pinion angle. I think the tech, reading the attached report, inserted shims by trial and error. Maybe just wording but I got a feeling he/she inserted a shim and tested the truck and then inserted another shim... This TSB shows how to measure and determine the angle of the rear U joint and then it becomes clear which shim to use...install and remeasure... I feel this did not happen.

So...Plan A might be have another tech do the work. Plan B is find another dealer. In either case, Open up a formal complaint with Ford Customer Care and request a Field Service Engineer visitation...

Plan C would be to use washers and shim the center bearing 1/8" which helped a few trucks if you are a DYI sort of person.... Or have a buddy that is handy do such?

I am sad you are having this concern...It is a characteristic of a two piece driveline but can usually be minimized.

Good luck,
Phil

Thanks much. Any thoughts on the tech's comments about the drive shaft being out of phase? That sound like something that a shim couldn't correct. Maybe a manufacturing error by Spicer.
