I believe hiding the key in the back will work, heres why. With my key in the front I cant lock it in(no keypad yet), but on a recent trip it took my spare key in a duffle bag with my clothes in the rear seat, I could lock them in no problem and truck would not start with just the spare in back seat. So I think if the key is hidden far enough away from the dash in the back, you can lock and they could not start if they got in.
There are devices I would refer to as PATS repeaters which passively amplify the signal from the key fob. Basically crook #1 points antenna at your house, and crook #2 uses the repeater transmitter to start your car and drive away. They likely got lucky there was a key in the truck, but would have probably had it either way.

Its very common on push button start.

As an FYI, having been a dealership employee who has seen this more than you can imagine, thieves tend to look for cars with keypads. Bust a window and 90% of the time there are keys in the car. If you are going to be away from your car and its in an area with little to no foot traffic you should take your keys with you. Concerts, sports events, park and rides, boat ramps......easy pickings.....

I've never seen this before - I think this will work better for me than the keypad inside the gas door. I will probably buy a faraday cage bag for the fob, however.

Thanks for posting this!

I didn't mean to kick off any sort of victim blaming conversation. It sucks that the truck was stolen, and by no means is it your fault, even if you left it running in the driveway with the keys in it (though if you tell that to the insurance company, they won't cover it). I was/am just trying to learn from the situation, knowing that I leave my keys in my Escape today, and specifically ordered the keypad so I could do so in the Ranger. It's a much lower severity issue that someone broke into my vehicle and stole ______ compared to someone broke into my vehicle and stole my vehicle.
You cannot lock your keys in the truck I tried. the horn sounds the light flash and the doors do not lock... you can lock them in the bed. this is the reason I got a hard cover. It locks and with the tailgate locked I feel fairly safe. Of course someone could brake the cover and get to the key.

How do you say this nicely, anyone that leaves the fob or spare fob to a new pickup truck with push-button start, in the vehicle needs their head examined.
Too bad you hadn't taken the key with you and locked it with the fob. Then the anti-theft module would kick in 2 mins later and disable your engine until a fob is present again. Ya that is a built-in component of your passive anti-theft module, and would have resolved all this fast.

And if you really want extra protection skip that stupid steering wheel club.... it is useless. Get a brake peddle club. That locks out your brake peddle so they cant "push button start" your truck or use your automatic transmission.

Isn't this all about an XLT model that doesn't have the option of push button start?

I would safely contend that I have spent more time, hiking, camping and working in the great outdoors than 95% of the Canadian population...
but sure, ok whatever. I stand by my post, none of what you said has anything to do with the OP's post which is what I was replying to...

it is ok brother, I am sure you meant no offense. Sometimes the words we type have stronger meanings for others than they do for us.
I am sure I have offended some here as well.... and for that, I apologize as well. It is a good group here for discussions. We are all passionate about our vehicles, that is the important part!

Cheers friend

And for the record, I was an engineer with the Canadian Military, It was not unfamiliar to me to live in a tent for upwards of 3-6 months at a stretch during my career. But you were right, I have never lost my keys to a vehicle... :)
