Yes good point, haste makes waste I rushed through as I was preoccupied and didn’t think it through.That's your issue you didn't fill the tank.
you left warm humid air, and alcohol in a metal air tight tank.
I do the same preseason start and run, I even turn off the fuel valve and let the carb run dry, but while that is doing that I top the tank off to full.
No air, less moisture,no ice.
Empty tanks get condensation which freezes. Alcohol takes a lot colder temps than the bulk the 48 states received last month to freeze.
Lesson always keep your tank topped up with gas in cold winter. never let it run dry.
