I just glanced through the Smitybuilt manual.Definite bummer... and only a little damage, I shave a little bit off the rope doing the initial wind up. too bad I didn't realize until it was all the way in.
My first recommendation is forget about the mounting screw and order a Bubba Rope Grabber mount. Leagues better in every way. https://www.amazon.com/Bubba-Rope-2...hvlocphy=2840&hvtargid=pla-627579835127&psc=1
Second, the manual says "some tension when winding" which should read "Minimum 500 pound load for the first 2 layers". You need the base layers to be very tight and densely wrapped. Hand strength is not enough.
Third, give your rope a real good look for any damage. Synthetic is great, but somewhat delicate. Take note of how far along the damage is and be aware of it. Synthetic rope, even if cut right through, can easily be repaired and you only loose about 30 inches for a 3/8 rope.
