I will soon need to haul some drywall and 4'x8' sheets of plywood and I built these simple racks. These are not nearly as heavy duty as John's lumber rack but I think they will hold several hundred pounds worth of plywood or drywall sheets. They are light weight and easy to store when not in use. I stapled some outdoor carpet scraps to the tops to protect the plywood and drywall surfaces.

That is pretty nice looking, how has it held up? If I manage to get the measurements correct when I go out there with the tape measure I'd love to copy the design if you don't mind.

Sure, hope it works out for you. I did end up removing the staples for the carpet and glued it down instead. That was the only thing that required some rework. The carpet not only protects the surface of oak plywood, it also keeps it from sliding around. For short trips I don't need to tie anything down.

John, went to your build link for this and all the content in your thread is gone. Can you help me out and send the drawings for this via DM? I definitely want to do this!!!

Here is my setup. Did a few mods to get it this way. I haul 20ft pieces of lumber, trim, siding etc.

I looked way back in the threads and it seems no one has added a post about lumber racks.
If you have one post it up.
"EDIT" Added pictures of a Rack-It brand lumber rack. The rack is rated to carry 1700# but the truck bed may not be able to handle that kind of weight.
They make aluminum versions and make them to fit around shells too.
This basic rack cost me $730 here in California installed.

.
I need to check mine, but I don't remember seeing holes. So I'm guessing we have to drill them.
But then I'd also be concerned about how top heavy it could be with lumber on top.
.
Anybody with lumber racks pretty comfortable with the attachment?

It's a random rack from a small truck, that was listed on Marketplace. I had to cut and weld it adapting it to fit over the softtopper not interfering with it's function.

I just transported 30 16' long dripping wet 2x8's. Truck did fine but obviously very top heavy with over 1000 pounds on the rack. There are 4 3/8" bolts holding the rack to the bed.
