I wonder how long before the others try and do this? In these trying times it just seems like another money grab by these auto manufacturers. How long before they make you have a subscription just to use your power windows and door locks? Sure you can go aftermarket but in most cases it's another fob you have to lug around. I bet they make the factory ones non usable with 3rd party remotes too.

https://www.thedrive.com/news/43329/toyota-made-its-key-fob-remote-start-into-a-subscription-service

News of Toyota's decision surfaced on Reddit last month after an eagle-eyed user spotted some wording in Toyota's Remote Connect marketing materials that suggested an ongoing subscription would be required for drivers to start their car remotely with their key fob. The phrasing was confusing, and some wondered whether Toyota would actually take this step. A peek at various Toyota forums shows some owners have been reckoning with this possibility for a couple years now, though with many 2018 or newer Toyotas still within their subscription trial periods, it's entirely possible that most drivers are unaware of the arrangement.

This is just the beginning! Soon you’ll have to pay for ac/heating

Hopefully this fails for Toyota and the others shy away from it.

I guess Tacoma sales are so bad they're now having to charge you for using your remote start to make up for it. ?

Did Toyota hire a Netflix or Verizon executive recently?

A Subscription to use the Key FOB? It sounds almost fake due to the ridiculous nature of it.
I thought it was "clickbait" when I first saw this. Unfortunately it's true. Also the guy in the video is an attorney who specializes in lemon law and does some good videos so between the article and the video it's credible.

Honda, Lexus, and a few others have been doing this for years. It's pretty ugly if you ask me. I get maybe the app is subscription service, but the key fob remote should be included for the life of the vehicle if equipped. Sickening.

Then again, Canada is limiting ICM sales starting in a few years anyway, and banning ICM personal vehicles sales by 2035. EV preheat and run on emission free pixie dust electricity produced by little magic fairies. Ooops, excuse the tangent.

All depends if enough customers cough up the money for the privilege of using the remote start or not.

Hopefully enough people do this to Toyota

So others won't jump on the bandwagon.

Heck no, your pixie dust and ferries all come from Quebec, don't they?
