Mice IN the truck...no bueno!

About eight years ago when I still had my '99 Tacoma, I began to smell at first what I thought was wet dog. It just so coincided with a rainy hike I had that day with my shepherd. But, then, as the days progressed it quickly grew worse and absolutely awful.

I realized something had died in the truck. Probably the engine compartment because it was worse when running the fan.

I popped the hood open and began a visual check. There in front of me was a dead squirrel laying on top of the battery from nose to ass, positive to negative terminals. ?

Here is my implementation, for both the cabin filter intake and engine intake. It's of stainless steel mesh, cut to size with tabs that snap in place inside the various inlets.

Accessing the cabin filter intake:

Openings #1 and #2:

On this next one, it looks curved on the bottom with a gap, but actually the mesh is flush with the bottom of the intake...deceptive angle :)

I trapped one last night. Yesterday when I drove the Ranger, which I rarely do, I noticed that a kleenex lying on the passenger floor was chewed and then the globe box had some paper bits. The critter seemed to be living above/behind the glove compartment.
Last night I placed two large sticky traps with cracker bits and the kleenex on top. He went back for more...

@jblc how are those screens held, by splitting wires in and out? What gage and hole mesh size? How hard is to get the cover to reach the holes?

I happen to have the "replace oil soon light on", although I have not driven it much since last change, just a few hundred. I wonder if I should take it to the dealer for a change and check ventilation filter if there is such a thing.

There's a cabin air filter behind the glove box, but there's a hole above it that a mouse can use to bypass the filter without chewing it.

Is that hole one of the two in the screen pictures above or a different one?

The fixture that holds the cabin air filter has a housing above it with a gate on it that moves back and forth depending on what setting you have the heating and cooling on. A mouse can bypass the cabin filter housing in that area. The 2 main holes that you need to cover with screen for the air intake is above and behind that on front structure wall of the cabin.

a different one, inside the vehicle behind the glove box right above the air filter. the point is just that a mouse can access the interior of the vehicle without chewing through the cabin air filter (assuming it's already in the air duct).

I have placed another double trap trap for tonight

So you are saying that the two air path holes are the ones in the pictures with steel mesh above, and saying that once in the mice can choose different paths.

Yep, that more than likely is how mice are getting in the cab. Once through those holes they can basically get anywhere inside the cab.
