Got a call from my local dealer that the Mavericks had arrived and I could check a few out for the day. I test drove two: XL FWD hybrid (demo) and a Lariat 2.0 ecoboost 4wd. I was very impressed with both. Tons of interior room, larger bed than expected and simple but useful interior.

Acceleration: Power on the 2.0 was reminiscent of my ranger when it was stock. Very very quick for what it is. The hybrid was not as fast but more fun to drive for me. Extremely smooth and seamless. quiet.

Cabin noise: You can hear the difference in a base XL and Lariat trim. Literally. The Lariat felt more refined and seemed to have less road noise. Wind noise and road noise is much more apparent than the ranger. Ranger is much quieter regardless of trim.

Economy: Drove both trucks around 50 miles each. Mixed driving in the 2.0 lariat was an impressive 26.2 mpg! Even more impressive was the same route in the XL hybrid… 44.7mpg!!! These things are amazingly economic!

Leg room/headroom: So this is where the newest technology and design beats our Rangers. They have large interiors with plenty of room for about anyone. I’m 6’2 220lbs and fit with room to spare. With my seat in driving position (way back) I could still fit in the back comfortably… but with knees grazing the seat. I swear the interior felt larger than my Ranger! Absolutely love interior on these trucks. Also storage is way better than the Ranger all around, particularly under back seat!

Bed usefulness: The bed is smaller than Ranger but more than enough room for most tasks. The tailgate adjustable cable latches are awesome. I love the track system!

Final verdict: The Maverick is an amazing home run vehicle. But I won’t be trading for one. I hope the new Ranger gets some of the interior and simple design that the Maverick has. It was a fun day! Here are a few pics I took of one of the Demos next to my Ranger!
Cheers, Ben

Thanks Ben,

First, I love your Ranger and I get why you aren’t trading it for a Maverick.

Second, it’s great to see detailed reviews like this from mid-size truck owners rather than from Motor Trend writers or others. ?

Great review and it's nice to see the side x side size comparison. For a $20K base model you cant go wrong with one of these and they will sell a million of them. Well, that's if they can actually get parts for them, availability MY'25.

Dang after hearing about the interior, I'd have one on order if they only had one more option. A plug in hybrid instead of just based on the engine. Sharp looking "truck" for people (like myself) who don't often need a "full" truck especially at the lower price. Thanks!
