Well I officially broke the truck (in) today. I backed into a dumpster and dented the tailgate and put a hole in it. The weird part is the backup alarm did not give me any warnings. :curse:

Now to look at my options to fix it short of filing an insurance claim, since my insurance company is getting ready to replace my roof due to storm damage.

As much as I don't care for the looks of the plastic cover plate Ford sells, that might be my easiest option. I'm almost afraid to see what body shops will charge to fix or replace and color match.

Try checking with salvage yards in your area. Tailgate should be the same for all models in the 19-21 years, and you may get lucky and find one in your color. LKQ.com is a good place to start.

IMO, I would not mention this to the insurance company until you have an idea what the repair will cost. If you mention this to the insurance company, you will have two claims - one for the roof and one for this. Here is why I am saying this. Around 4 years ago, my wife and I were in our Rav4. A lady did not see us coming down the road, and pulled out of a parking lot and tried to cross 3 lanes. I ended up t-boning here (LOL!). She was sited by the cop and I was not. My car was undrivable and standard procedure was to impound it. So my car was racking up $100/day in impound fees. Her insurance company was Liberty Mutual and they were taking their time on accepting responsibility. In the end it took them 3 weeks to accept fault. After one week, I got pissed at Liberty Mutual and made the mistake of bringing my insurance company - Progressive - into the picture. Progressive repaired my car, and then was fully compensated by Liberty Mutual. So in the end, Progressive paid nothing and dropped me. Their reason was we filed two accident claims within the 6 month period. One accident claim was a legitimate one involving my son, and the second was this one. Progressive was insistent that even though they paid nothing on my accident claim, that I still filed a claim.

I have been an insurance agent for a major national company for over 25 years. You can file the claim, home insurance has nothing to do with car insurance. Rates and cancellation policies are filed and approved by your state department of insurance. Several claims in a short period of time can get you dropped IF they are the same type. There is no cross over between home and auto claims. Roof claims are almost always storm related and usually not held against the client. The math is simple, will your deductible plus increased premium as a result of this at fault accident be more than to fix it yourself. Get a bid and decide. Good luck.

Yes I am going to get a few estimates first and look at every and all options available. Yes I know the house is separate, but I also had my 2018 Jeep Renegade totaled 2 years ago from some kid hitting me.
